Anyway to quiet harddrives?

I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 9 hdd. It is supposed to have the fluid dynamic motor thing which makes it more quiet than ball bearings. But it isn't! Its louder than my seagate barracuda IV or my Western digital 7200 rpm drive. Is there anyway to quiet it down? Any hard drive casings that can do this? Thanks.

It could be a faulty drive... My first WD HDD was very loud.... It made that annoying high pitched sound so I RMA'ed back and got a new one. Very quiet.

How can I RMA my drive? Do i send it back to Maxtor or the place of purchase? Also my drive had a rebate so I no longer have the UPC barcode. Will that be a problem?

Since your drive had a rebate and you sent in the UPC, explain the situation to the retailer you purchased the drive from and ask for an even exchange where they swap the HD's for you and they keep the UPC from the new drive they are giving you. Let the retailer know that Maxtor gives retailers RMA's based on the info from the drive itself, not the printed serial # on the UPC. I hope this helps Naruto 🙂

If you want info on how to quiet your system and hard drive, here is a link:

The hard drive section is down the page. Good reading and ideas at this site.

Edit: I forgot to say that I did the rubber grommets mounting to my hard drive and it worked great.
