I'm really woundering what this kid did thats so bad?

I have a feeling its something stupif like getting caught filesharing or something. If its something like Hacking good luck stoping this kid from getting acess he will find a way, and when you stop that way he'll find another (hell I can think of 5 or 6 ideas off the top of my head that you would never think of)

OP is a social worker. This kid did SOMETHING that caused his agency to get involved in his life. Something computer related and apparently very naughty. OP now has two options:

1) Torpedo every possible means for this kid to get on the internet
2) Bounce the kid into the system

Okay. So he either downloaded warez and got caught or he downloaded and/or looked at pr0n and got caught. Either way, if the proper authorities know, what will preventing internet access do to stop him from getting in trouble?

What did this kid do to deserve this punishment?

If the kid was just downloading rubbish then it's not all that big trouble. If he was hacking into something it may be far better to introduce him to some security firms. In the UK i know a few firms that would be willing to take a gifted kid and turn him away from the darkside. Hell he may even get a good job out of it in the end.

Warez and porn do not merit the introduction of social workers. I'm thinking more along the lines of "This kid raped BofA for all they're worth"

It's not that difficult really, if the parents are willing to be involved.
Just restrict the computer to some open area of the house, like a living room or kitchen, and only when the parents are home. When parents aren't home, lock it up!
This is because it sounds like he will get around most common hardware/software solutions, and other means may be too expensive.
However it sounds like the parents are far too lazy and don't really care.

Open up the hosts file and make all his favorites point to goat C intstead.

He won't want to use the internet much longer.

From what we don't know about the kid, that may be counterproductive...

GENIUS! You win.
The kid can always boot Linux from CD or USB if he is smart enought. Unless you lock the BIOS too, however he could also be smart enought to reset the BIOS by removing the battery.

It is very hard to force kids to do things the way you like, however you might be successful if you encourage them to move into the right direction.

You may be correct in this case... but not in my case.

When I was 16, my parents, who hate me because of my sexuality, took my hard drive over to Children's services. When their (apparently clueless) tech couldn't access any data off of it, they took it to the police. Who (surprise!) couldn't get anything off of it, so they sent it on to some state branch. They made an outrageously huge deal out of the fact that I looked at porn. There was a ton of warez on that drive too, but nobody bothered to even bring that up, and I sure didn't want to.

After they had several psychiatrists evaluate me (who all said that they couldn't find anything wrong), they finally found one who agreed with them (and I think that was only because of money). I was placed in a mental rehab center, for a couple of months.

To make a long story short, it was an extended vacation. The entire staff there, including the psychiatrists, thought that the reason I was there was laughable, and they really didn't care what I did, just as long as I didn't kill anyone or break any laws that would get them in trouble.

Oh, and I wasn't allowed to have a computer while I was there... the entire staff became friends of mine within days... so I did have access to a computer, some of the time. ;)

That's why I'm always reluctant to help social workers remove computer access from kids... it happened to me, and there are a ton of psychiatrists, counselors, you name it, out there who agree that Children's Services was sticking their head where they shouldn't have been.

This case may be completely different, I have no idea.

But I've talked to many social workers about stuff like this, and I always make them give me the details before I help them. I know that won't be necessary in this case, but thus far, they've complied. :)

Well I'll put it this way if this kid continues on his path he will end up dead, and you don't end up dead by just looking at porn. This kid is a sycker and belives everything anyone tells him on the net, which already has put his safety in jepordy.

Because he likes his job? Anyway, from that, it's VERY clear what happened.

I've worked with kids who are conisdered sexual predators. I'm not talking old kids either...like ages 9 and up. One kid would actively seek out younger children and as a result had to be watched everywhere he went. If the kid is one of these kids then I would think restriction from internet would be a necessity. If the kid has mental/psychological issues mixed in - restriction on internet is definately a good thing.

Remove ethernet and modem PCI cards.

Install linux and set up a BIOS password so he can't change boot order and boot from CD or floppy and uninstall it.

all he has to do is pop out the battery and the bios will be reset.

the ghetto solution is to put calking glue in any unused ports.
