has yet to not (forgot that operative word heh) work for me. i've done it to prolly 50 people in the past week.

Some servers automatically throw in some nonsensical word when you whois another user, for example, 53.wa.aol.com would become hidden352.aol.com. I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about, but if it is, the server will give you your own ip if you whois yourself. Other people whois'ing you won't see your full ip address.
