Anything wrong with this PSU?

What is the Wattage? Looks even nicer than the X-connect, and I THOUGHT that was cool when it first came out. Although I haven't heard many good things about it so far. This PSU looks sweet though! I bookmarked it, and will use it on my next build.

It looks sweet, though I have yet to see benchmarks for it most modular psu's sux ( modstream, neopower, and ultra x connect ).

a lot of their "kick a$$" votes come from modding sites and not performance sites. if i were going to spend that $$$ on a psu, i would get a pc&p, fortron, enermax or antec, but that is just me...

for that kind of money get a Seasonic S12 600 watt, your ears and power rails will thank you.

Unless you plan on getting Dual SLI 7800 Ultra's, a nice good ole Fortron FSP350 with the 12CM fan is perfect for almost anything (only $40). Its like a toyota camry (like a TANK) :D.

The amperage on that model of PSU seems okay.. Looks good too.. I don't know about the quality since I've never used one.

"Test Results

Despite its cool looks and generally solid values, the Hiper Type-R 580W fails our test: The voltage is too high on the 12V line.

Input current: 759W (210V, 3.67 ampere, cos phi 0.98)

Output current: 580W (21.2 ampere/3.3V, 26.0 ampere/5V and 2 x 26.3 ampere on 12V, 20W on -5/-12V, 5V standby)

Efficiency at maximum load: 76.4 percent (179W of dissipation heated up the air by nearly 5 Kelvin)

Noise measurement under full load: 61.1 dB(A) from a distance of 12 centimeters

Memory oscilloscope: Here we see some excellent values, whereby the 12V CPU line deviates by 20 mV and the 3.3V line by 40 mV, all of which is in line with the specs.

The reading for the first 12V line was 12.18V and for the second 12V line (CPU) it was 12.04V; the recorded value for the 5V line was 4.94V and the 3.3V line measured 3.29V. The reading for the 5V standby line was 4.96V. The final eliminating blow for this test candidate, however was the -12V line, for which voltage of -13.32V was recorded. That is way too high, since the specification only allows a maximum of -13.2V. It should be noted here that the manufacturer's operating manual provides an incorrect specification for the noise ripple measurement. Instead of the 50mV prescribed by the ATX specification, Hiper lists a value of 70mV. "

I don't mean to bump an old post, but toms hardware is one of only reviews of that PSU that I have seen say it is bad and loud. Almost every other one seems to love it for stability and being so quiet. Maybe toms hardware just got a bad one.

Actually Hiper is rated  by just about everyone who's looked at it.

Like someone else said... if you are going to drop $130+ at least go with Seasonic. I'd say spend the other $70 on a PC P&C but that's me...

I've spoken to a few people that have htem and they seem to like them a lot, on just the first page of google there are 5 reviews that absolutely love it?

And not a single one of those reviews is worth reading.

How to review PSUs; Example 1 / Example 2

In what way does those reviews, of different PSU's, show me how to review a PSU?

I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm new to understanding power supplies, what makes the ones I posted not worth reading? You did pretty well to read them all that quickly, they were quite long.

PSU's are a bit different then other pieces of PC hardware. It's probably the only component that doesn?t lend itself well to "real world" tests; which all of those reviews use. To really know how a PSU is performing you have to use synthetic tests.

How can that be when they are going to be used in the 'real world'?
Surely if one performs better in the real world than another that performs better at synthetic tests, the real world one would be a better buy?

I understand that there may be better PSU's for the price, but to me the Hiper still seems like a good PSU in general?
