Anything wrong with mixing different RAM speeds?

I've got 2 512 dimms of DDR400 and one 512 of pc2700 DDR in my ASUS a7n8x right now, should I not be mixing the different ram speeds?

I've had one total lock up and one random shut off since i put it in, but I also put in a friends random hard drive, it's running fine since I took the HD off.

Thanks!

It'll be fine if you're running them at the speed of the slower stick. But if you're trying to make the PC2700 do PC3200 speeds then you'll almost certainly have problems.

Yeah, should be fine as long as you run at the speed of the slower modules.

How does one set the speed to that of the slower modules? What should I look for in the bios?

If your RAM is running sync'd with your front side bus (FSB) you just set your bus accordingly.

PC2700 = 166MHz = DDR333
PC3200 = 200MHz = DDR400

So you'd set your FSB to 166MHz and your RAM should follow suit.

Is your processor a 166MHz FSB or a 200MHz model? If it's the latter you'll probably want to run the RAM asynchronously else you'll be lowering your processor speed when you lower the FSB. Or better yet, replace the PC2700 stick altogether.
