I am getting tired of waiting for prices to drop so this seems like an okay price but I have no experience with HIS. this card clearly isnt reference but is that a good thing or a bad thing? in the reviews some guy said he got the gpu to 925 at stock voltage. can voltage even be adjusted on non reference cards? also I am a little worried about dealing with HIS if an issue comes up. and LOL at the moron in the reviews that put one of these with an Athlon 64 4000+.

btw there is also a non reference XFX 5850 for the same price but it looks like the fan may not have manual control.

I'd wonder whether stock ATI drivers will let you control the fan properly -- I have no idea either way but that's been a problem in the past with custom designs from Asus.

It would stink being at HIS' mercy for driver updates.

They should let control fan speed even on a non-reference model. I can't vouch for their support, but their cards are usually great quality.

pull the trigger. you don't see much 5850s going for 290 shipped anywhere. HIS is a good company if i'm not wrong part of sapphire and serve good RMA and Services.

Nothing wrong with it. I tested it, and it's pretty quiet and the fan can be adjusted.

thanks for the replies. I still cant decide to pull the trigger or not. grr

there is also an MSI 5750 1gb on newegg for $100 after $30 rebate so 200 bucks for those crossfired seems like a better deal. its software only crossfire though whatever that means.

EDIT: after looking closer at that rebate policy for the MSI 5750 it only allows one rebate so that deals out for me.

No need to bios flash ;)

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1035336810

That's what I do with my reference XFX Black Edition 5850, works a charm.

That's one way to do it....But it has it's downfalls also. Memory is a hit and miss as the 5850 bios doesn't feed enough voltage to it. The hacked bios gives just enough to mabye get to 1300 or close.

I find it best to just use RBE to edit the hacked 5870 bios inputing the clock's I wan't with the gpu voltage I need. Adjust the sliders for overclocking to max I want. Everything is taken care of on bootup. Just use CCC to overclock core and mem. Being on water I don't have to worry about fan speeds. At specs in sig I break 19k in 3dmark Vantage!

That is a much more elegant solution, but also too much like hard work for some people (me included ;)).

I guess if you don't have the xtra 5 minutes or so then you got a good point :)

I think the most important thing is getting over the fear of flashing the bios. If done off a bootable USB device it's pretty safe. Going back to stock bios is pretty easy also. You just need to save it before you do any flashing.

did you get a chance to overclock it? also do you know if it allows voltage adjustments?

Haven't tried yet. Will try to tomorrow... I do find it annoying that it doesn't allow higher clocks then 775MHz, unless you use the ATI GPU tool... Don't think it will do extra voltage, but I'll check with Afterburner... For easy overclocking, I'd recommend the Asus HD 5850 TOP

I've been using ATIwinflash and it's worked well for me. It's been stable and hasn't caused any problems, over 25 flashes so far without a hitch. I have my trusty old FX5200 PCI, just in case.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a non-reference design if I can help it. With so much info and so many options for them, they're much easier to work with.

I have the XFX in one of my machines. No voltage control, but Im pretty sure I can control the fan. I havent had to yet, so I would have to confirm.

According to what was posted on SD, with hardware crossfire you get 80-90% performance out of the second card, and with software crossfire you get about 50% performance out of the second card .

I'm thinking about getting this 5770 1GB sealed with warranty from this FS thread for $130 shipped. If I were you, I'd pick up two of those and get better performance than the 5850 for less money. It does hardware crossfire, but doesn't come with the crossfire bridge, and I'm not sure how much those are.

I'd advise against HIS.

http://www.hisdigital.com/us/support-71.shtml

Notice that their support address is support@lexypacific.com. Lexi Pacific is their US distributor. HIS doesn't even handle their own RMAs, but leaves it up to their distributor because they have no US presence of their own. Took me over two months to get a replacement card from HIS via Lexi Pacific.

It looks like a great card to me.
What is the Nvidia comparable card to this, btw?

wow thanks. if any of them were non reference coolers I would certainly jump on it. I am just worried about the fairly noisy gtx470 fan that still lets the gpu run very hot.

Totota there is a Palit card that is much quieter and has a dual fan solution (runs cooler) for $329 MSRP comming out real soon.

Here is the review..

That Msi card looks ok though and you get voltage tweaks with it for 329$.

where does it say that the Palit dual fan gtx470 will be $329? surely they would charge full msrp or even more for a better cooler.

yeah the MSI card looks tempting but the voltage toll can be use on any Nvidia card I believe so thats not really a selling point. it does use some quieter than stock components though which is nice. I could also get Dark Void for free which I guess is worth something lol. I wonder where the free game actually gets downloaded from though because if I can get through Steam that would be nice.

"At $330 this is a fantastic valued GTX 470. Some companies are selling the reference design for more. We have to ask; why would you buy that over this one? "

okay thanks so I guess I just missed it when I skimmed the page. well I have the MSI 470 in my cart and it also comes with a free 8gb flash drive. I cant decide if I should wait for the gtx470 cards with the quieter coolers or just go ahead and pull the trigger. I dont want to be kicking myself for not waiting to get a much quieter cooler running card for the same price.
