The mountains in North Carolina are really pretty that time of year. The Appalachian Trail through the Nantahala NF (south of the Smoky Mtns) is spectacular but you might get snowed on.

Orangeburg?

Shhh!

I dare not mention it's name!

:sneaky:

But really, lots of really nice people there. But it's kind of funny how quickly you notice the differences in attitude, humor, general outlook of things from one place to another, when you really aren't that far apart.

Aren't those some of the worst states racism wise? I know, I know it's a stereotype, but still. If true, do not want.

Yup. When I was there for a couple of weeks, one guy who I had got to know a little bit, refused to talk to me after he found out my wife is Asian. There are some really, really close minded folks in that area.

Your wife is Asian? WTH? Where's the ignore button?

kidding. Just living up to the stereotype.

I went to Costco today, and the checker was kind of rude.

OMG COSTCO CHECKERS ARE RUDE!

BMW Performance Driving School could be fun if you're in the upstate.

Visiting Charleston is fun. Not too much to do with it being winter. Also depends on what you like to do.

Its also about $1k to take that course. As a Michigander temporarily living in South Carolina (working for a certain aforementioned company) I can tell you that there is not a whole lot to do as far as I can tell, and honestly the BBQ isn't as good as what I've had other places (like Texas, or even Slow's BBQ in Detroit) Probably the most fun thing I have done there so far is hiking in the Caesar's Head area, great views. Sunday (if I get out of Texas) I should be going to one of the largest paintball ranges in the world there.

By the way, the people down here drive horrendously.

Yeah, nothing you said earlier in this thread contradicts what you just said.

Please look up a word called prejudice.

Oh come on now. Getting your panties in a twist aren't we? The fact that racism is strong in the south is just that, a fact. I'm not saying anything about you or any other individual who lives there. I know the south has a great heritage and there are wonderful kind people who live there. And I clearly stated that I know it's a stereotype. Internetz is seriouz buziness.

Well, when you vote in a guy like Strom Thurmond for 40 years, you can make certain assumptions about the voting public.

In the same light, we voted in Jesse Helms for nearly as long..

Unfortunately a lot of the good places are outdoors and its going to be cold and wet. Asheboro Zoo is great, though don't know about how you would like it with this weather.

Asheboro zoo is fantastic.

it's funny, from all of the recs in here, we've got Eastern, Western, central-Western NC; none of which is very close to each other.

I suppose it would help to know the OP's route, exact destination, and ability/willingness to travel.

Gf's family is from SC, so I visited Charleston a few months ago. Beautiful town. Lots of historic places to see. Let me know if you need any recommendations.

I don't know much about SC. North Carolina has beautiful mountains in the west and beautiful beaches and swamps in the east with a whole lot of not much in between (vacation-wise that is, if you were job hunting then the opposite would be true).

South Carolina sent Fritz Hollings to the United States Senate for almost 39 years, which somewhat offsets the Thurmond heritage.

To the OP: besides the Smoky Mountain Parkway, the Nantahala River gorge (U.S. Hwy 19/74) is an incredibly beautiful drive. The river is also a great rafting site.
Chimney Rock's not bad, either.

I can also second the recommendation or the Biltmore Estate; it is the acme of nineteenth century private residence.

Yes, definately.

NC is a pretty big state. I live in the mountains in Western NC. But you'll need to give us some idea of where in NC you might be before I can give you any recommendations.
