One of my group members lost all of her work recently. She had her file saved on a flash drive, and now when she goes to open it, it looks like this:

⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪⨪ԁᣖĄ Ą Ą Ą Ą Ą 鐇Ɉ혈Fꈃ臾㼚稧怵 븆

anyway to recover the text from inside the doc? its a 97-2003 file

You sure she didn't create aliases/shortcuts to the files, instead of copying the files themselves? I've seen that happen, and you get the exact kind of random text like that.

There may be an older deleted or replaced copy of the document still on the drive that might be recovered by Recuva or similar utility.

It's possible the header data got corrupted. She can try to save the file as an RTF then reopen it in Word and save it as a DOC file again. That should restore the header and retain the formatting in the process.
