I know that sometime in mid 2006 nvidia is rumored to come out with a multi-core gpu based video card based on a g80 chip. Whoa! :D
But before that will they come out with anything more powerful than the 7800 gtx 512mb? That card whatever it will be called is most probably what I will be getting because I don't want to wait so long for the g80 cards.

But does anybody know any details or rumors at all?

Ok, as far as nvidia is concerned their next top of the line card will be based on the g71 correct? If so what will the budget cards 7200 and 7600 (if I'm correct) be based on what chip I mean?

7200 (G72) - February 2006
7600 (G73) - March 2006
G71 - Feb/Mar 2006. 90nm & 32 pipes (or so says the Inq which is not the most reliable of sources) It is suppossed to fight ATI's R580 chip which is due around the same time.

Yes R580 will probably be more powerful, BUT you might want to wait because rumor has it ATI had ANOTHER EVEN MORE POWERFUL CARD that will come out later next year. Believe it or not even that amazing card will be replaced itself by another card coming out even later.

Moral: buy for today or perhaps what might come out next week. Waiting for whats down the road will make you never buy a card since there will always be a better one on the way.

Just curious, is it called the g71 because it will be coming out BEFORE the g72 and g73?

I would guess not until the end of 1Q 2006. So if another shipment of GTX512's does not show up by then, you may as well wait. Although the price of the 512 is also a good reason to wait. Get a nice SLI setup.

Its just that I want to get the best card by the time I have the money for the new dell 3007wfp. Which will be around feb.
I'm hoping by then that the g71 cards will be available.

EDIT: Although, I wonder if the r580 will be a better bargain because of ATI's necessity to get their stuff back on the hot list.

No. The G72/73 is based on G71.

The way the video card market is going, who knows what will be out by then. If you are going to wait that long and have enough money for a high end card it should be a G71 or R580.

No. The G72/73 is based on G71.
The G72 and G73 are just derived from the G71 core...

It's the same with NV40 (130nm: GeForce 6800LE, 6800, 6800GS, 6800GT and 6800Ultra on AGP), NV41 (130nm: GeForce 6800LE and GeForce 6800 on PCI-e), NV42 (110nm: GeForce 6800GS on PCI-e), NV43 (110nm: GeForce 6200, 6600 and 6600GT on PCI-e), NV44 (110nm: GeForce 6200TC on PCI-e), and finally NV45 (which is a NV40 with PCI-e)... They are all derivatives from that one NV40 core...

NV47 is G70. Thats why G71 could be the acutal NVs next gen.

From what I hear the G71 is just a 90nm G70. Although that should give them a higher clock speed over the GTX and if they use the better memory and tweaked core from the GTX512 it should make for an impressive set of cards.
