anything i need to know when switching from dsl to cable internet?

everything is simple and don't spend your money on a modem just yet. Try theirs out for a month($10 )

Also, Cable is gnerally DHCP or static IP based on your MAC address....so no need to use PPoE clients or configurations and such as with DSL( not that it is that big of a deal)

Your friend is getting 520k downloads in the same measure as your 1.5mbps. Your 1.mpbs = 155k while his 520k = 5.2mbps. I have never seen cable offer over 1.5mpbs for a residential connection. Could you let me know how much it is?

Comcast here offers 3+ mbps for $42 for Comcast Cable subscribers or $53 for non-subscribers. I haven't heard much about the new 5mbps service yet. I don't believe the modem makes a difference. I'd get the free modem. I previously had DSL and it was DHCP also not PPoE. With Comcast though you have to register your computer online in order to get access. Comcast provides you with the software to register your computer.

comcast cable is 3000/256 standard...(for residential)...for $10 more you can get 4000/384. If you dont get 3MB down w/ cable then you must live in some weird area or have some f****d ISP....

edit: they (comcast) added that $10 more for some more speed just the recent days...IMHO its not worth it since the 1000 more really dont do anything...and CC (IMHO) is already expensive enough with their $42/month and $3 for the modem.

And..YES...definetly LEASE the modem...if something goes wrong etc. you can just exchange it...if you OWN a modem you have to pay lots of money for the tech if you run into problems. Leasing is the way to go.

The Motorola is (what i heard) a GOOD modem...but i have the RCA DCM315 (which is Docsis 2.0 compatible) and which they seem to hand out now everywhere. People say it sucks...but i have no probs whatsoever with that modem nor do i have any probs with my cable connection at all. (Low pings, no packet loss etc...no problems whatsoever). BUT if you feel like it...as said you always could exchange the modem for free if you want a motorola instead the RCA.

Edit2:

it will very likely (99,9999999999%) NOT be PPoE but static IP...PPoE is for DSL

if you want to tweak..get 'cablenut' and the update for it..install both and apply the appropriate settings...IMHO a very nice TCP/IP tweaking tool.
