Ya there is a image.google.com trick to finding wallpapers.

You just do a search for 1920x1080 as one long word and you'll find a lot. Websites that have desktop images for download typically make them aviable in multiple resolutions and do the file names in <filename><resolution>.<filetype>

So it's easy to find stuff that way.

Otherwise Macdesktops.com (plural) is a nice place to find images. Not all images are aviable in high resolutiosn though (the site has been around for a long time)

If your desktop resolution is set to 1920x1080, you can go to http://images.live.com and select "my desktop size" from the dropdown at the top right.

My desktop is 1680x1050 and doing a search for "wallpaper" with that option set brought back of ton of images in that resolution.

If you don't find enough or what you are looking for, also try searching for 1920x1200 as that's the native resolution for most 24inch LCDs, You'll wind up having to crop some of the pixels to fit it on your 1080p device, however, in many cases that isn't likely to be an issue. (Though it can be ....)

Thats just what I was going to say, seaqrch for 1920x1200 and make it fit. I found TONS of them when I got my HP L2335.

Also, I wanted to say what drag said but I didnt feel like being a wise-ass. ;)

Ya sure.

Open it up in Gimp. Right click the image or go through the image's menu... Go Image ---> Canvas Size ---> unlink the chain that constrains porportions, select the new canvas size, then select the offset (so it can crop the bottom more then the top or visa versa if you want) then select 'resize' to apply the changes.

the do file --> save. Select the new filename and safe it as a jpg or whanot. If it asks that to flatten the image then select export.

That should be it. Not to difficult.

Simple and accurate?
Just make it the wallpaper and select "Tile" position.
I promise you will not see any more than 1920x1080 if that is your desktop resolution.

Wow, thanks for that "Tile" tip! :)

Can already see the increased clarity from 1:1 pixel mapping.

What exactly does "Tile" do and why do other files literally produce repeated tiles all over the desktop?

tile "tiles" it on the screen repeated.
If the image is the size of the fill screen or bigger than it, it centers it and only has room for one, so it won't appear to be tiled.

Tiling was indeed a great idea, I wish I would have thought of it at that momment ...

"Center" is also a good choice if you dont like the very top of your image.

"Stretch" is OK if you're lazy and dont mind a messed up image.

paint.net for accurate cropping i use. I have 1680 * 1050 so i usually have bars with my pretty car pics but they blend in nicely.
