kind if ironic that you can buy dual layer burners for next to nothing, but couple of blank discs will cost you almost as much.

give it a couple more months / a year and dual layer media will be reasonably priced

i hate how burners always come out before the media is even on the market.

The burners themselves are virtually identical to their single layer counterparts, a firmware change was basically the only thing required.

The media is substantially different (and insanely expensive).

That said, I remember spending a couple $ apiece for CD-R's.

With Blu-Ray and HDDVD coming out soon, I don't even expect Dual-layer to be around much longer, to be honest.

that's just my 2 cents, and I'm certainly no expert. I really don't think the prices will ever come down enough and be widely available.

HD-DVD doesn't even have a recordable format ready yet.

Blu-Ray does though, had one from the start.

Ihave had my dual layer burner for about three months now. I have purchased ONE package of dual layer DVDs so far and have not used them. I got them at Wal-Mart. They were like 5 for $30.00!!!

I'll give you $20 to find me firmware for my NEC-1300a that will make it a dual-layer burner. :)

maybe the real question should be "has anyone 'backed up' one of their dual layer movies to a blank dual layer disk???"

I've done 6, at which point I realized it was cheaper to just buy the damned DVD.

Maybe HD DVD will be affordble but I doubt BD recorders will be. They're talking about $1,000 for the players. I think the burners were $3,000 when they came out in Japan. I don't think DVD-R / DVD DL will have much to worry about for a while.
