Anyone work in an environment which is very open and easy going?

I suspect retail store environments like the one I work at where all the staff if young are much more conducive to this kind of thing. There certainly are rules that we follow and a management structure but otherwise it's a very open and easy going environment. We joke with each other, make fun of each other on face book etc.. There's this guy at work for example who is obviously bisexual and makes no attempt to hide the fact and he gets razzed about it by our manager and others, and likewise he makes fun of us all the time. And not it's not all sexual of course lol, this is just an example. It's all light hearted stuff but it does make for a fun working environment. We are going out for drinks next week for example.

This does not exist in the corporate world! Reminds me of the last job I had while in school. It was all shitty work but the work environment was something you could relate to. Although before leaving, it was turning to shits. Shrug.

How did it turn to shits before you left? There certainly are aspects of this job that aren't the best but over all I don't mind it, like it, for a semi temporary job.

I think there are corporate environments that build such an atmosphere. Take a look at Google.

I have a feeling Google is a bit too big to have this kind of really easy going atmosphere. I have seen stuff about their open work environment but it seems more like a university campus.

You will see this environment more often where all the employees are the same age, such as in retail or fast food. It isn't so much a manufactured corporate culture issue like google.

Of course, the role that you have in the workplace is going to have an impact on how you interact with the other employees. In my part time job, I can hang out with the other kids, go out for drinks, be "one of the guys". In some ways it is a welcome change from the real job where to maintain authority, you can not socialize with your subordinates, regardless of how open and easy going it is.

I worked (over the summer, and will work after graduation) at a firm where 90% of employees are between age 22 and 28. They're very serious about the work, but dress is super casual, the 3 kitchens (for ~140 ppl) are always well stocked. There's a poker room, ping pong table, pool table etc in the office. Free bar food and drinks at a nearby bar once a week.

It's a really good time =)

This sounds exactly where I currently work at but everyone is varying in age from 20's-50's. I work for an internet company and everything is stocked for us and we mess around and can talk and we shoot Nerf guns at each other, lunch is catered for us for $5 every day and free on fridays and free drinks/snacks, game rooms, arcade machines, etc and this is fine with the higher ups because all of us are mature enough to be able to get our work done when it needs to be. We don't need stupid rules like No Cellphones While Walking or any crap like that.

Absolutely I/we "work" in a store with 6 plasma monitors and a laptop behind the counter. I only work if someone calls in sick tho.😉 I look at tape 90% of the time from home.

So doesn't that imply the easy goingness? and that campus environment is modeled after the employees desires. maybe they feel more creative and efficient having an office like that

That's not true, I work for a help desk and it's exactly like that. It's one of the best parts of the job, the fact that you can more or less say anything to anyone (well, within reason obviously) and it's fine. People there just seem of a good nature and have a sense of humor.

In an environment like that it is likely at some point someone is going to get screwed. All it will take is one person having a bad day to take something the wrong way or out of context and the shit will hit the fan. I learned my lesson about this when I was a kid working at a gas station. We all used to joke around with one another pretty freely and it was all great until the day I got a call from my buddy telling me not to come in, I was fired. It seems that while we were joking around like always I called the owners kid a dickhead, something I didn't even recall doing because it was so routine between all of us. That particular day he didn't like being called a dickhead and I paid the price. Lesson learned fortunately when it didn't count for much other than weekend money.

I'd say it's pretty easy going here in some aspects. I won't go into too much detail, but we're one chunk of a VERY large company so the rules are relatively rigid and what you'd expect out of a corporation. However that's mainly just to cover their asses. Between most coworkers they're friends with those around them so nobody has any issue with joking around and stuff.

Our specific location is a little different than the others though, so we get more freedoms. For example, we have no "sick days" like most in our position. If you're salary and you're sick, then you're sick. If you have to schedule a doctors appointment on a weekday, then you have to do it and you just put in some extra time if needed to finish your tasks on another day. It's trusted that you won't take advantage of it.

yep

Anything sales related is usually like this. Us sales people are not normal, so things that might get people in other departments in trouble are just funny to us. I was in my weekly meeting with my sup and she had this huge toner on her desk. It looked like a big swirly dildo. So when this flamingly gay dude walked by I stopped him and asked him what it looked like. He said "a big dick" and kept on walking.

Of course we facebook stalk each other, make comments that are completely out of line and try to bang each other's moms. Its a good time.

Google openly admits it's culture is modeled after academia (what happens when PhD candidates start a company I guess). I think the key to Google's success is that they have a large number of primary self-motivated employees, so a an atmosphere like that works for them. Ex, when Google gives their developers 20% of their time to work on personal projects they actually get some really great projects back, as opposed to employees spending 20% of their time slacking off.

I work in a supposed professional environment. We have people in our office that smoke inside. A few even bust out the whiskey at the end of a long day but you need a thick skin to get past the joking.

If you don't do the work the boss will ream you in front of everybody (even clients). A few people have been know to leave in tears and/or chest pains but I guess that is a know work hazard.

Not going to happen...

my thoughts exactly. at that age, everyone might still just be naive.

hopefully it will get dismissed, but a friend of mine is currently embroiled in a sexual harassment charge because he said to a girl who works a different shift "hope I see you later" 🙄
