I recently took a job working graveyard shifts (Thurs 8:30p-8:30a, Fri. 9:00p-9:00a Sat. 9:00p-9:00a). On sundays I usually get a few hours of sleep but try to wake up by 1 so I can sleep by midnight that night so I can wake up at a normal time on monday (I have regular classes monday - thursday).
Has anyone worked graveyards in the past and had to reset their sleeping schedual? How did you deal with it? What were some of the things you did that helped you get used to it?

While you were on your shifts, how did you stay awake? What did you do that helped you get trhough the tough hours, mine are from 4-8. I can hardly function at 7am.

Thanks.

I did 12am-830am shifts for 2 weeks one time... for the first little while I drank energy drinks but once my sleep schedule adjusted I didn't need 'em. I got by by adjusting my sleep schedule to sleep from about 12 noon to 9pm and then did anything I had to do before I went to work. Basically I survived by having no life of anykind except for sleep and work. I found I actually got more sleep doing graveyards because of that :).

I work a 12:30-9am shift, and dont really have too much of a hard time staying awake, but when I do feel tired, I dont fight it, I take a nap. Its pretty nice being one of two guys on the shift, and the other naps more than I do. Im a really bad night person anyways, so adjusting my sleep wasnt too bad. At the end of my shift im not too tired, but when I get home, relax a bit and take a look at my soft, comfy bed, then I'm ready to crash out.

yeah I have absolutly no weekends. On sleep through saturday, and on sunday I am so tired from trying to reset that I can't do much anyways. But I've had worse jobs. They pay me about 9.25 to make a phone call every half hour and play ps2/xbox/snes/ps1/n64 :p

Haha, no internet there, but that would be nice. I think I am going to bring the old laptop and spend some quality ME time on my next shift lol.

I've always been a night person. By age 15 I seldom went to bed before 3am. After the military I worked graveyard for about 8 years. It was totally natural for me, so I never slept at night unless I absolutely HAD to do something during the day. Now I'm trying desperately to adjust to a day schedule, and it's nearly impossible. I've got about 2 years before I have to be up and effective by about 6am. At this point I'm not sure I'll make it.
