But if someone asked me how state retirement worked, I could tell them.

My take is the federal employees under FERS are pretty much the same as private industry. Our retirement is primarily funded by our TSP(401K type program). The biggest advantage is that TSP typically outperforms funds by any other company such as vanguard. And the fees for TSP are almost nothing.

Yeah, I actually benefitted from the crash in late 2008 via moving money out of G into other funds anticipating a rebound.
