OK. I am looking at this monitor and I can get it for $274 + shipping. Can anyone please comment on it. Does it have ghosting? I have an older Dell Inspiron 8100, which I bought in December 2001 and it has pretty bad ghosting. Will this monitor be a big improvement. I see it has a high response time of 25ms and therefore I am worried about ghosting. What about the image quality? Thanks.

I ask this because the next two monitors I am considering have issues as well:
The LG L1710SK is priced similarly but lacks DVI and C|Net gave it a 6.7/10.
The Sony StylePro S74 is $100 more than the Dell but has 16ms response time.

You will probably see some improvement in response time, but I bet you'll still see some ghosting.

I have been looking at the Dell UltraSharp 1704FPT which is 12ms, DVI, $349, but I cannot find out what type of color support this monitor has (16.7 million colors meaning 8-bit or 16.2 million colors meaning 6-bit dithering).

I don't want a monitor that "cheats" to get a fast response time by using only 6-bit processing and dithering, so it's important that I find this information. Unfortunately, no one at Dell seems to know.

Regarding the LG 1710SK, this monitor was given some award by PC World as best 17" LCD. It has pretty positive feedback. But it doesn't have DVI. For that you need to go to LG 1710BK which is $304 at new egg (it's the same as 1710SK, just with DVI). It's 16ms and I'm considering it.

If it were me, I'd spend the little extra and get a monitor with a response time no greater than 16ms.

Good Luck!

Where do you see the Dell UltraSharp 1704FPT. I went to their website and can't seem to find it. The only have the FPV, not the FPT. Do you have a link. I would pay the $349.

I got the 1704FPV a few days ago. So far so good.
It is very luminous for my eyes (I guess each pair of eyes sees a screen differently) and for my dimly lit room (though in broad daylight it is perfect), so I had to set each color at about 30% (preset=100%), which allowed me to boost the contrast almost to the max, thus getting nice videos (24 season 4 plays perfectly. it is great to watch from the couch, 6 feet away) with black borders looking black (they were grey with colors at 100% and contrast at 20%).
I also had to change the colors of my linux desktop. I turned all background colors to black or dark blue, and text to grey.
Colors are beautiful.
Smooth scrolling is totally unusable, but anyway on my Sony CRT i had stopped using it since it made my brain tired after some time. Default scrolling (3 lines at a time) is OK.
I do not play at all so I cannot tell you about gaming with this monitor.
No dead pixels.

I've been looking at 17" monitors myself and am interested in the same way. I think you may be able to call Dell and order the 1704fpt. Not 100% sure though. You should be able to do better than $349 since that is regular price. I have seen comment that the 1704fpt is only available with system purchase. Who knows?

I'd like an answer to the 6bit/8bit question too. Usually 6 bit monitors don't get great reviews, so stick with 8 bit. I would be surprised if either 1704 was 6 bit because most comments have been favorable regarding the monitor's clarity.

Hi,

I just ordered myself a new Dell XPS Gen4 rig with the 1704FPT. It'll be here Friday, so if y'all have any questions, I can answer them then.

A quick search on Google:
1704FPT @ Dell

I thought I once read that it used 8-bit, but I could be wrong, since it's so late. ;)

Cheers!

The 1704FPT seems very different from the 1704fpv I own.
Here are the specs of the 1704FPT (found on ebay):
Viewing angle 130° (vertical) typ, 140° (horizontal) typ

Luminance output 300 CD/m ²(typ)

Contrast ratio 500 to 1 (typ)

Faceplate coating Antiglare with hard-coating 3H

Backlight CCFL (4) edgelight system Response Time 12 ms typical

So the 1704FPT is a TN, 6 bit color monitor.

My 1704FPV is definitely 8 bit.

So what does this mean? I know a 6-bit LCD produces less colors, while 8-bit makes 16.7Mil, but will a person notice this on the desktop? Will graphics look drastically different? This kind of leaves me with an empty feeling in my stomach. :(

How reliable is an eBay auction anyways? ;) :p
