Anyone with an MBA degree?

Little bit of background on me, I graduated with an EE degree and after 2.5 years of working, absolutely can't see myself doing engineering anymore. I am really considering switching over to business by going the route of an MBA degree, possibly accounting or finance.

Anyone here have an MBA degree (acct, fin, market, whatever) and what is your current job? What kind of things are you doing? Is it worth it?

Just curious about your opinions and any advice you may give. Thanks!

I have my MBA in finance from a smaller school. I worked for a timeshare securitization issuer, then moved to Capital One doing the same, and I am starting a new job in 9 days with a boutique investment bank in NYC, all within 3 and a half years.

I personally loved my MBA experience, it got me into a field I had never considered before. While I think my CFA charter taught me more about finance, the MBA has been a nice vehicle to get me on track for a great career.

When you get in, study hard and come out with a high GPA while making good friends. It'll pay off in the long run.

Florida International University.

My wife's (girlfriend at the time) dad had cancer, they lived in SoFLA, so we moved down there to be closer to them. It cut me off from better schools, but the school isn't what makes the person.

I'm currently getting my MBA at U of M. One of my co-workers is just about finished with his and he secured an IB job making 95k a year + bonus for an internship. He said the average bonus there was 150k last year for full-time workers.

It's not hard to make a ton of money in IB. Sometimes you gotta sacrifice your life to do so though, 90+ hours isn't unheard of for nubs. The one I am taking requires at least 50hrs, but I can see myself putting in 70-80.

It wasn't too bad. I only had a 650 on my GMAT, but I had great work experience, letters of reference, essays, and volunteer services. They look at the overall package. PM me your email and I will send you over my application if you want it. Total prep time was probably 6 weeks non stop. Literally, non stop. I studied/wrote essays until about 8-10 PM every night and on the weekends for about 6 weeks straight.

Can't remember the name of the company, but it is based in Huston for Gas & Oil.

edit: The hard part was getting in, but once you are in, you are set.

Hey, sweet, thanks dude (YGPM)! Yeah, i was thinking of doing some volunteer service myself to pad up my resume. I'm impressed that you got a 650 in 6 weeks prep time though, bet you could've cracked 700 with more studying.

What are you going to get into after you're done?

edit: oh and how much studying did you have to do? edit 2: I mean in school :p

I'm currently doing my MBA part-time being partially reimbursed through my work. I'm a process/software engineer but I too can see myself getting out of the technical side of things to a degree. Not sure what I want to do exactly after, as I too have flirted with the idea of finance possibly but I'm not sure I'm ready to make that kind of commitment either. I'm basically trying to get as much exposure to as many different things to see what I end up liking, but I did really like Finance. I'm about halfway through now, and hope to finish within 2 years (again I'm doing it part-time, and its definitely a lot to juggle between that and work).

I go to a top 30ish school in Mass (#1 in Entrepreneurial though :p ). Let me know if you have any other questions.

As to getting in I worked 2 years and had good references (plus have a masters) and studied a good amount (roughly 6 weeks) for the GMAT and got a 700 (not bragging just stating). Good luck!

EDIT: Also maybe I was just too ignorant or naive, but I really wasn't too concerned about getting in although in hindsight I've seen many people really try hard to get in. I probably should've been more concerned looking back hehe :)

Ahhh, you go to babson huh? :)

I'm looking into that as well. How is the school? What do most people do for work after they graduate (They can't all be entrepreneurs, right?) :)

Bingo ;)

I like the school overall but man its expensive (though its on par with others in the area, about 60k total before books). I don't have a full sense of what most people do afterwards, but I have a good friend going there fulltime and doing finance and he's been able to line some decent offers up.

I noticed though in the part-time program there are a lot of engineers (software especially), which I thought was interesting.

But overall I think the school does a good job having relationships with various companies and having good career and job search resources.

Actually, the 6 weeks includes the time to study and take the GMAT, write and proofread my essays, gather my recommendation letters, and submit my application. I went to an info session and had the wrong application due date :)

BTW, you have my app in your email.

As far as studying, this is my first semester. I'm taking 6 credits right now and put in about 6-10 hours a week total. In my undergrad for computer engineering I studied 3 hours per class per semester and did fine. It probably has something to do with me being more responsible now.

How much does GPA matter vs. work experience and letters of recommendation? I am in engineering grad school now but could see myself wanting to go the MBA route at some point in the future. My concern is getting beat out by some liberal arts major who managed to get a 4.0 because they took all fluff classes. I guess what I am saying is that since MBA applicants come from all different backgrounds, how heavily does the GPA weigh in the decision, and do they even take into account the difficulty of all your previous education?

I wouldn't overly obsess about your undergrand GPA. Mine was nothing special, 3.3 overall (3.6ish in my primary major though). I did do well on the GMATs so I'm sure that helped, but I'd like to think that they look at everything.

Also I have no way of proving it (other than lower average GMAT scores) but I think it is easier to get in part-time programs than a full time.
