Anyone want to reccomend a good dial-up provider?

One of our users wants a new dialup provider, anyone have a decent, inexpensive, unlimited dial-up provider that will have an access number in Portland, Oregon (and Vancouver, Washing) and doesnt require proprietory software to connect (I hate using their dialers).

Might try peoplepc.com, they've been advertising cheap dialup.

56k.com used to have a big list of ISPs, I don't know if that still exists or not. Boardwatch magazine (is that even around anymore?) published a HUGE list of ISPs every year, but like the magazine, it may not be around anymore

doesnt peoplepc want you to use their proprietory software?

<-Thankfully has not have dialup in nearly 4 years.

PeoplePC has a special dialer. I used it for a month, damn, the speed is Ok, but I think it's sort of spyware. Even I installed Mcafee Firewall, my computer was attacked badly ...almost dead. No way to clean those virus, had to repartition and reformat. Then I swithed to broadband. :)

Try CWnet.com. They have local access number at the city you mentioned, and no propriety software installation needed, and their rate is around $10-12/mo i believe.

What about the pay version of Netzero? I tried the free banner version once when I was at my cousin's house with my laptop. It was pretty fast for dialup. I was getting 5-6K/sec downloads...

I think that also requires a special netzero dialer, I want to stay away from any special software.

My mom (in St. Louis, MO) has been using AT&T dialup for several years and is reasonably happy with it. I think it costs her $15/month.

I keep a AT&T dialup account for when my DSL goes down. It's $15/month because I have it linked to my AT&T phone bill.

No special dialer software is required, it takes about 30sec to setup the dialer in XP.

AT&T usually comes out #1 or 2 in customer satisfaction anytime someone rates ISPs.

Well, I guess maybe that's a little steep for dial-up, but I use their dial-up service as a backup for my cable and DSL connections (Color me paranoid.), and I've found them to be utterly reliable. (I wouldn't install any of their hokey orange-branded software, though. Sheesh! I saw that crap on a guy's system and asked him what was up. He told me that an Earthlink support person told him that he "had to have it". So I guess that's both the software and the tech support that I can't recommend. But they do a fine job as an ISP.)

To me it's all about reliability.

i use and love earthlink's dialup service. always fast connects, never busy signals

edit: you get what you pay for... if you want $5/mo dialup, expect crap

I would recommend AT&T as well. You can sign up here. You do NOT need to be an AT&T customer.

thanks everyone! I normally wouldnt take it this far but it was one of our department heads and he has been harassing me about every dialup service that he's heard of for at least a month now, hopefully this info will get him off my back :D
