I'm almost through the single-player but haven't tried MP yet.

Are you thinking of PVP or co-op? In co-op are there any NPCs to hire to fill out your party? (The manual isn't very detailed on MP besides the key commands.)

No NPCs that you can hire in multiplayer if I remember right, at least in the multiplayer campaign that shipped with the game. I haven't played DS in awhile now but man did I play it out for the first few weeks after its release.

It is co op. I'm playing right now, but my character is level 0 and my friend is 14, and refuses to start a new one. I wish I had backed up my high level character! If you want to start a new character, feel free to join.
You can't hire NPCs, but you don't really need to. You can heal yourself with potions anyway.

I highly recommend you download and try Yesterhaven (a new map from Gas Powered Games) if you haven't already. I thought it was much better story wise than the normal MP map. Though it is nowhere near as big.
