about to pull the trigger on buying one and have heard both good and bad things, thought i'd get some of your opinions on it
Anyone using the Motorola Q?

4 negatives from my experience with a clients' Q:
1) No cut & paste...argh!
2) No editing Office docs...meh.
3) Poor battery life...expected.
4) No MSFP update from Verizon for push email...grr...
Anyways, regardless of those issues, if I were on Verizon, I'd pick one up in a heartbeat, the positives really outweigh the negatives IMO.
I know Goosemaster just got one, might want to check in with him.

My boss has one and so far has no complaints. I played around with it, but I wasn't too impressed. The lack of direct push is a HUGE disadvantage too.
I'm one of the biggest Blackberry proponents on this forum...their devices and software are great...but if you want anything other than a business tool (music/video device, lots of games, software, etc), you should look to a Windows Mobile device like the Q.
The other big problem is if you're with Verizon, they don't have any of the new Blackberry devices yet. They're still on the 7100 and 7200 series.
As a former crackberry addict, I am a huge fan of the VZW XV6700. Email is near BB speed, maybe 5 seconds lag time.

Direct push is real-time delivery of email from an Exchange 2003 server. Might not be that big of a dealbreaker if you don't rely on your device for instant email, but I have found that most devices get better battery life with an always-on data connection and DirectPush than polling a server every 15 or 30 minutes...not sure why.
Verizon should release an MSFP ROM for the Q eventually, so if you're interested, but currently don't have an exchange server, mail2web offers free hosted Exchange accounts with DirectPush capability.

If I buy the Motorola Q in the middle of my plan through Verizon or even a third party (eBay, for example), do I still NEED to get the data plan? I know you do if you buy it with a new service...
I was thinking about the Q as well but IIRC doesn't Verizon require the addition of a $45/mo data plan?
I was going to get the Q but once I realized I have absolutely NO need for email acess out of the office I went with the V

they don't REQUIRE it, but you can't do much without it. It's really pointless to get it without that plan. That's the main reason I went with the V.
this is for powerusers or peeps who need to dial in to maintain servers or such. I'm sure there are many more applications for it.
When I looked at the Q they quoted me a price out the door for the Q if I didn't get the data plan and then a price $100 less if I DID get the data plan. Keep that in mind OP.

I think no touchscreen is a severe limition on the Q and the Blackberry... with that said, I would go with either a Treo or an ipad phone (which is what I have at the moment)

Honestly, as many people have told me, it is simply a smartphone, and a crippled one at that in some respects, and an excellent one in others.
It really depends on what you want to do with it. For us, its serves as a utility knife of sorts, keeping tabs on various IMAP accounts, giving us driving directions via google maps, keeping track of our contacts, taking pictures onsite for quoting purposes etc. It cannot edit attachments, but we only need to read them.
What I really like are its multimedia capabilities (it is MY phone after all, even if I use it for business too)
I am planning on getting a 2GB miniSD car, bluetooth headphones, and upgradign to the yahoo-to-go service
