Anyone using Spy Sweeper?

Everything tells Spy sweeper is the best antispyware availabe. Now I just got it. I like it however I would like to disable real-time protection and just use it for scans. I did that in the options but there is still a ssu.exe process running.

What do you think?

Which version of spy sweeper are you using? If you're using the 5.XX versions, spy sweeper will always be running the background, you won't be able to end task it either.

I'm still using V4.5.9, which is less memory intensive and doesn't cause as many problems.

I think ssu.exe is the update executable, and you should be able to disable it without any ill effects.

Spy Sweeper has an exceptional detection rate, but using the real-time protection with all of those shields is a huge resource hog.

John, I am not doubting you, its just that I haven't really noticed any slow downs or any issues with Spysweeper. How much system resource does the latest utilize?

Perhaps it is because I once had Zone Alarm Pro and that thing was definitely a system hog of the highest degree. My internet browsing and loading times were painfully hindered, hampered, and slowed down with ZA. When I jettisoned that program I was amazed at the speed I gained.

We use it at work, and it is a resource hog ... but I think that is mainly due to the way our SysAdmin has it set up 😛

I only use it for on-demand scanning while cleaning customers computers. I stopped selling the program over a year ago since it is major bloatware and has caused numerous issues with IE and Windows in general. I can't begin to list all of the calls from my customers where the SS shields have lagged their system to death. I used to highly recommend the program since the detection rate is top notch, but due to the fact that a majority of the builds after 4.5 were flaky I cut my ties with Webroot.

What version are you using? The latest is 5.3.2.2361

I think it uses up to 70MB of memory, and it seems to cause some delays when all of the shields are enabled. If you're content with SS on your rig that's all that truly matters. 🙂

John, interesting... The only lag I experience at all is after the Desktop Screen loads. It takes Spysweeper a bit to load, but then I don't notice any slowdowns at all. This slowness may be due to the fact that NOD32 and my firewall are trying to load as well.

Webroot was aware of this and they actually released three newer versions almost back to back. There was one version that froze my screen (others were having this issue, too) a few times and they rectified this issue in their latest release.
