I dont know if anyones brought this up but this just in as reported by cnet:

AT&T plans to raise its monthly cable modem Internet-access fees by $6 per month effective June 1, CNET News.com has learned.

The long-distance and cable giant is expected to inform current broadband Net customers via email in May of the planned rate hike, according to a source familiar with the plans.

The expected rate hikes could affect more than 1 million of the nearly 1.3 million consumers who subscribe to the company's AT&T@Home and Road Runner services in various cities, the source said. Because the hikes have not yet been announced, it is possible that AT&T could change the amount and the timing of the increase, or back off entirely, if it meets with consumer resistance.

Dont you just love a monopoly.

Well they are not a complete monopoly, you have DSL, satellite, ISDN, and yes even dialup. But as a new customer, this is suck.

And now that all of the dsl companies like covad , rythms, northpoint are going the way of the dodo, and folks like at&t can buy their networks and customer base at .02 on the dollar less competition means higher prices. Beautiful and thank you FCC for making a mess of it.

Well, I pay $50/mo for SWB DSL...the "basic package" to boot. I did have the option of getting Roadrunner, but didn't hear too many good things about it from the folks in my area (I'm NOT turning this into a Cable Vs. DSL thing...) so I went with DSL. I'm very happy with it. My DL speeds are consistently 120-150kbs. Heck, 6 megs a minute? I can deal with that. My dial up connection netted me about 1 meg every 45 minutes!

Anyway, I had a feeling that most DSL and Cable providers would be getting "with the program" and charging about the same thing. Kind of a "you want high speed? we got your high speed right here...for a price!" My $.02.

AT&T@Home wouldn't be buying telco networks, so the Northpoint's and Rhythms of the world will probably be mostly absorbed by the baby bells I would think. $45.99/month + fees. That's starting to get steep - although I suppose I'm good up to $65/month in reality (before I'd start questioning the need for high-speed Internet access).

Wow, the prices for high speed internet are gross down there. In Alberta (I'm not sure about the rest of Canada) we pay $39CDN for either cable or DSL.

I really feel for you guys.

Not if Road Runner is the only broadband privider in your city. Here in Wilmington, NC, RR is the only provider. They could probably raise prices by $20 a month and people would still pay becuase once you try braodband, you never go back.

I'm at school now...but on Sunday, when I go home...I'll be riding the 56k pony again, because there still isn't broadband of any form in my area. I would love to pay 6 more dollars for broadband...but I don't even have the damn choice.
