Anyone using a NEC ND-3500 in an external enclosure?

If the IDE cable is connected, the drive refuses to turn on, i.e. the activity light stays dark and the tray will not open. If the drive is powered up in the sled without the IDE cable, it will come on.

The drive works fine when plugged into the system's IDE port and is recognised by Nero with no problem.

I tried with two different 1394 (Firewire) sleds with the same results.

I really prefer to use this drive externally!

Anyone else have similiar results?

Cheers!

What OS are you using? With anything pre XP I think you will need to install drivers.

Its hardware related. Changing jumpers makes no difference. It does open if I use an 80 pin cable that's chopped but XP won't mount the drive (doesn't even see the sled).

Perhaps the chipset (Oxford 911) is incompatible with this drive. I've used dozens of devices from DVD-R's (Lite ON, Sony, Plextor), CD-R's (same brands), CD roms from even more manufacturers, hard disks from every manufacturer and notebook drives with an adapter using this sled (ADS) and never ran into a compatibility issue like this!

Cheers!
