Anyone use VOOM? (Or other HD Sat. TV)

Comcast just pissed me off and I contemplated this move for a while anyway. Only thing I miss is On-Demand if I make the switch. Anyone here use VOOM? How do you like it? What is your local Channel coverage? Let me know.

If not VOOM. Do you have DirectTV HD or Dish HD? How do you like that, why should I or shouldn't I switch?!

Karsten,

Is it possible you could revise your thread a little to also cover HD DirecTV and HD Dish Network as well as VOOM? I've been wanting to see how people rate all three services against each other.

Well, I am open to opinions about the other options, but honestly you can't beat the HD content that VOOM offers. If I do switch why wouldn't I go with VOOM... well I guess I just followed your request... lol

Thanks for that link!

Any first person reviews? I know some of you folks have to have HD service from one of the dish guys?!

I'm a Dish subscriber, but no HD. There just isn't enough content that I'm willing to pay for ................ yet. I'm as far from a sports junkie as you can get.

Here's a link for some forums that should have a lot of info for you.

I had DishNetwork w/ HD for about 3 years and just switched to DirectTV w/HD about 4-5 months ago. Main reason I switched was that I wanted the HD TIVO. Dish's HD-DVR is just crap from what I've heard.

Overall, I'm completely happy with DirecTV. Especially with all the HD football I get every week w/ Sunday Ticket 😉

I used Voom for about 9 months or so. It's actually a pretty good service. There's FAR more HD than any other service. Easily more. This being said, a lot of the stuff is filler, stuff I didn't watch at all.

Local coverage was complete. They'll install a good antenna if you tell them. They installed the ChannelMaster 4228 for mine, which is one of the best.

Have Dishnetowrk here (and HD).
What they have is OK, HDNET, HDNET movies and Discovery are the best. They do not have any sat. capacity in space, so they won't be rolling out muich in the near future. I am actually thinking about going back to cable since Cabelvision just came out with an HD PVR for $10/month, have more channels (but noi HDNET or discovery which is a negative), but Cable DOes have YES for Yankee games (DISH will nevwer get YES). I wouldn't reco Dishnetwork these days. One time, I was a huge advocate of theirs.

One of the good things about VOOM is the lower compression. Whether or not you'll notice the higher quality over Dish, DirecTV, and cable HD depends on the quality of your display device.

personally think HDTV is best left to cable, had Time Warner HD and we got moved to Bright House HD because of the buyout, all locals in HD, HDNET, discovery, tnt, alot of nice channels in HD

bullshit there isn't enough content.

$65 for the regular voom pkg, $90 for the one with all the channels. I have it. I have had it since July and love it. They have far more HD than anyone. I am just worried they will go bankrupt in a year or so. I use it on a 56" Samsung DLP, 42" HD Plasma, and a 30" LCD. It looks great at 720p, absolutely worth every dollar.

Sounds you won't be going bankrupt anytime soon...

Unless you spent all your money like that!

😀

I subscribe to DirectTV HD, as far as content, it comes with HDnet, DiscoveryHD, BravoHD, one HD PPV, HDNmovie, ESPNHD. In addition, you can pay for sport packages such as NFL Ticket, they are now in HD. I also use a small UHF antena for the OTA local HDs, and get all the local channels (YMMV). As far as compression goes, there's no loss of quality if the original programing is in HD such as HDNet, DiscoveryHD and Major Sporting events. A degradation in HD qualities is derived from film material or anything that was not really recorded digitally (and in inHD) that has een upconverted to HD resolution. I think this is true for all receivers and should be true for Voom as well (Voom subscribers please confirm). The quality of the HD image will depend on the quallity of your display.

HD quality also depends on how much the provider compresses their signal. Dishnetwork went to 3 HD channels per transponder from 2 (except HDNet,Hdnet movies and their preview channel). Noticeable difference in quality indeed.

Just another voom review here... I pay 59/month (grandfathered in at a lower price until jan).... Service is good and with the addition of channels to get to 70 Hd channels in March 05 plus the DVR coming out in the first half of 05 (supposedly all locals and fox sports and espn2 are some of the rumored channels so far) makes voom's future bright....

Ive had no problmes with their equipment which gets some flack occationally... seems the newer software has fixed most bugs with it and hopefully we will see some new features put into use.

With their $1 instal for up to 3 HD recivers you cant go wrong right now (and $5 to rent per month per receiver)

no kidding, you have Discovery, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, ESPN, HBO, Showtime....and more, pretty much the channels you typically (the average consumer) watches are in HD

I have the three transponder directtv oval dish . Its to a 57" hdtv(toshiba) . Its very clear BUT you lose picture during very bad storms . I have had directtv for about 10 yrs now and its always faked out during very strong storms . The new oval dish is better in that its on Two satis but still the picture goes out and "searching for signal"is on all channels . I also have cox cable , its been stable here lately .
