Anyone use VMWare or prehaps have goten wine to work?

I am looking for the holy grail of running Windows apps under Linux. I would love to be able to have all those goodies with the freedom of a REAL OS. I can't seem to get wine to run properly and I don't have the money to buy VMWare or Win4Lin or whatever that $300 program is. Any suggestions for a poor college student?

Win4Lin is $79.00 I believe and VMWare Express Linux (Runs only windows 95/98) for a 2001 College grad is $20.00 and the regular price for VMWare Express Linux (again runs only Windows 95/98) is $79.00

What's the difference between the Express version and the full version? The Win98/95 thing? I guess this will effect me since I intend on using my dual boot Win 2K partition. Have you used any of these programs? Which do you prefer?
