I just got back from that place and GOD THAT THING SUCKS. It has a touch screen LCD which is pretty cool but right after you scan the item you have to immediately put it in the bag where there is a scale right under it. If you don't, it'll go crazy and you need someone to come over and unlock it and try it again. First time me using it, and it took me a lonnnnnnggggggg time to scan everything and then pay. It has some bugs...but a very neat idea.

I choose to not shop at WalMart, given that as a company they are bad for the economy in general.

i don't think the wal-mart here has it, but i always thought it was a neat idea. i didn't know you had to but the item on a scale, that's a good idea to try to deter theft, i wondered how they would prevent someone from scanning a pack of gum and taking a cd player or something..

i use it if i have a few items.
But yesterday i was behind some retard that didn't know what he was doing. he had 3 items and couldn't get it done. The helper cashier had to come over and do it for him.

took like 15minutes for him to get done.

I also hate it when someone has a cart full of crap go to one of them.

Those things work really well if you do exactly what the machine expects.

I was a little torqued about having to wait for someone to come over and verify that I was over 18 so I could buy some Nicoderm patches. :| I'm paying with a credit card for goodness sake! Sigh...

KingSoopers (Kroger) is using those. I find them easy to use, but I don't like how it affects the hours offered to the people that work there (I used to work for KS and I know it's not easy).

I used it a few times, but the thing is just quirky. Even if I scan and set in bag it sometimes still comes back with errors. One time I freakin wigged out on the thing and started slammin the can down on the pad yelling "ITS IN THE BAG! ITS IN THE FVCKING BAG!!" and the lady came running over asking what was wrong etc etc......
Ever since that episode when I kinda lost it I avoid the auto checkout lines....

LOL, yeah it does have a couple of quirks :p

I use the one at Kroger sometimes, best for only a few items. Would work great for larger order too if you could move packed bags right into cart and not worry about keeping the scale happy.

i try not to..because usually ppl are too dumb to operate the thing and it causes delay in the line... lift 1 item at a time..ste it on the scanner/scale... then place it into the bag.. skipping or trying to go fast will cause weight unbalance and the machine thinking ur trying to steal :D

I tend to side with the argumnet the machine is too dumb to keep up with me. Seriously, how freaking much processing power does it take to keep up with a guy scanning and setting an item in a sack?? I go to that line to scan n bag baby, not poke around waiting for a scale to calibrate to the weight after every item I've added. Screw that.

AHHAA

I didn't go that far, but it's really flaky.

Also, I HATE how some items it says please do not put them in the bag for some reason....I'm like WTF. Then I had a case of water and this is a pretty big size and it wants me to put it in a bag?! I was like STFU and moved on.

They have those at Meijers here in MI. Once you get used to them, they are awesome. Here they have a camera focused on each one, and if you/the machine screws up, the cashier fixes it within a second. The only time I dislike them is when some idiot gets up there and cant figure out how to scan their items.

I was at meijer the other day and was behind a lady who was having serious trouble scanning an item. She probably scanned the thing 50 times and it wouldnt scan. Finally the cashier came over to help. Apparently she had her thumb over the barcode of her douche.

Try it sometime. Trust me, when you slam a can down hard enough to crack the seam, people come over to help in a big hurry. ;)

Whenever I have the problem I just chuck a can of green beans at the clerk's head.

Almost all grocery stores/ department stores have them here. It was a little better when I was the only one not afraid to use them. People seem to be catching on quick though. It would help if they standardized the machines so the one at walmart= the one at Kroger.

The least they could do is record someone with a voice that's appealing instead of a digitized pseudo-female noise.
Options should look like this:

Press here for female voice.
Press here for sexy female voice.
Press here if you want her to talk dirty while you scan! Add .99 per scanned item.

If the checkers are smart enough to use the scanner, and you are having problems, maybe the Express checkout isn't the place for you. Let the experts do the job for you. ;)

Oh, it works glitch free if I scan slow. But, if I try to scan at a blazingly fast 2 items per minute or more it suddenly seems the machine thinks I'm trying to unnecessarily use up its sytem resources or something, and feels the need to force me to slow down through its horrid item placement algorithm, which suddenly becomes stuck in some facist-programmers-version-of-a-joke loop.
So, my choice is reduce my intellectual capacity to that of Corky and scan at an average of 1 item every 2 minutes while Mr Cray-in-the-box there keeps pace or stand around and read magazines as I slowly work my way forward to the human checker.
