Anyone use OpenSuse LEAP?

Are you distro hopping?

That same exact problem of cpu and gpu reduced speeds.. it happened again on Ultramarine.

So I went back to Fedora. I noticed by it's default settings Fedora has a lot less repositories that give updates vs the constant updates Ultramarine was getting so at least one of them is creating a problem.

That brings me back to why I swore by Debian or LMDE.. they don't push constant rolling updates.. they push 1 big one every 2 years after testing it a long time.

A bit like my linksys router that had all kinds of problems after an update so I had to go back to the older software version. Sometimes it's just best to go with: "If it's not broken, don't fix it!"

So I'm currently debating between Debian or OpenSuse Leap which are long update distros rather than rolling ones.

@WelshBloke

These are my repositories in Fedora:

1758127428128.png

Very basic and the only one I added is google chrome.

But in some distros, especially ultramarine I had like 10-30 more and a lot were turned on and I suspect they created problems for me.

Strange as it may sound.. I think Ultramarine works beautifully with nvidia but has problems with AMD.

And Fedora it's base distro works beautifully with AMD but has problems with nvidia.

I was very close to going with opensuse leap earlier this year when I was trying to decide on a daily driver. I was very curious about Openmandriva as well which also has rolling and stable release versions.

While I dont have a lot of personal experience with opensuse, they've been around a long time and have corporate money backing like redhat to Fedora.
I even occasionally seen suse compiled .RPM install files on app download pages.

I think I often get timid about venturing outside the Debian/ubuntu/Fedora sphere of community help if something goes wrong.

I'd say it's definitely worth a try, and give Openmandriva a look too.

@Indus time to give Zorin a go!

I kinda want you to actually do this so I can get you to set Steam up in exactly the same way as me to see if BF2 works!

I have before and it's fine but I'm sorry but I can't get used to gnome full time.

Infact I like Cinnamon but my only reason for trying to find alternatives to LMDE is it's Cinnamon. I just need a KDE distro which is why I've tried Bazzite/ Nobara/ Cachy/ Ultramarine.

Fedora is fine but I still don't fully trust it.. I mean it works like Ultramarine and isn't pushing too many patches, but I'm still not sure it was an Ultramarine repo or a Fedora..

I know Debian works.. I'm just considering alternatives incase I have to switch again. Good thing about Debian is timeshift would work again and I'd be back on EXT4.

BTW @WelshBloke I've more or less figured out that rolling release while it sounds great, creates problems in the long run.. sorta like games with patches that break the game and need to be fixed.

I need something that just works.

Maybe I'll go with LMDE7 when it's out since it's LTS Kernel can support my 9060xt 16GB.

Debian here. I've always been on some kind of debian, even when it was a *buntu. I've used some other distros for specialty purposes, but for daily use, it's debian.

We all keep coming back to Debian don't we??

IT JUST WORKS!

Never heard someone say that debian patch/ update broke my system.

I'm with you on that! I think it's part of the learning curve coming from Windows.

Just going to point out that Zorin is based on the LTS version of Ubuntu! 😉

Zorin Light is Xfce and it's really well done. I actually really dont like xfce 90% of the time, but Zorin's implementation was so slick I installed it on my low spec 2-in-1 laptop for travel.

But you shouldn't have any troubles just installing KDE on Mint/Zorin. My work machine started out as Fedora Budgie, then I installed GNOME, Cinnamon, and MATE to play with and stuck with Cinnamon. only had to remove extra apps and reset the default 'app opens with'.

I do love that Linux gives that choice! It took me awhile to get my head around the choice of DE (like gnome or KDE) and windowing systems (xirg and Wayland) and that you can mix and match all these things to make something fairly unique to you!
(Not entirely sure if if got the nomenclature right there so put examples of what I mean)

Gnome with gnome extensions is just great for me though. I can set pretty much any distro up to look exactly how I want it!

Fedora and Debian are both solid choices! I kinda like the idea of those base distros that are just themselves but then I run them and there's a bunch of QOL things that I end up missing. I guess that when I've been using Linux for a bit longer I'll be more aware of what and how to install those QOL things myself on the "base" distros!

Not specifically about Zorin but I've definitely broken things by installing Gnome on KDE distros or KDE on Gnome ones.
Also it does get messy doing that as you get a ton of duplicate apps and I really struggle with Linux apps that I'm unfamiliar with as they can have such esoteric names!
That KDE command prompt app is pretty good though!

KDE is pretty good once you figure out you shouldn't delete your taskbar panel PERIOD!

At least you can reset to the default!

I'll have to try it in a VM to see how smooth it would work, but if I wanted Mint or Zorin with KDE, I would install it, then remove gnome or cinnamon and clean up any extra apps.

Zorin forums has a how to on adding/removing other DE's

I like the KDE taskbar.. especially keeping an eye on how the video card memory gets hot while gaming but the core is still cool!

So Indus are you going to give opensuse a try?
the community has often said it has one of the best KDE implementations

Addendum:
I spent a few hours today testing Leap in a VM.
I'm doubting now it will work for your use.
I couldn't get corectrl, LACT or coolercontrol to work because they are made for tumbleweed and many Leap packages are too old now.
coolercontrol even has an "foolproof" appimage but when I tried to run it, nothing happens...
going to try out openmandriva next. it has a LTS build with KDE.
it's a shame neither of these distros, which use RPM packages, are compatible with Fedora RPMs.

Yeah I too tried in a VM and couldn't get it to work.

Right now I'm on fedora and while I'm definitely not trusting it fully it seems one of the Ultramarine repos created problems for me. Everything else is working.

I'm holding off on updates too.. I may do it when Fedora 43 comes out and then just hold off till 44.

But it seems despite our hate of slow updates with Debian.. it seems to be the thing that can save us.. KDE, LTS kernel, stability.. it has everything!
