Anyone use an air purifier?

I am thinking about getting one for the bedroom but I know nothing about them. Does anyone use one? I want to reduce dust and other things that make people with allergies sneeze and feel bad. Do they even work or are they just gimmicks?

Room is about 12'x15' and carpeted.

get one that doesn't use filters as the cost of new filters every 3-6 months can get expensive.

I use a honeywell one. Has two internal filters. One is activated carbon, costs 20 bucks every half year to replace. The other is some other type. Its a reusable filter so just vaccum it every year and you can use it again.

In my area, all of the HVAC companies are now no longer installing electric-base centralized air cleaners. They have discovered that it is far better for them to sell you a system as expensive, or more expensive, requiring quarterly filter replacements that are $40 or more per filter. Yes, their form of leech-ware. They now actively refuse to install the electric ones that they use to install.

rabbit air! we have three of these in the extended family and love them. Clean the filter for years, automated dust and odor sensing with variable speed, very quiet.
Amazon has the best prices.

I have a holmes one I picked up @ walmart for 40$. I like it in the bedroom even if it was just for the noise lol. But I replace the filter every few mnths and gets a good amount of dust etc. So I like to think it does something! Filters are like 12$ a piece so nothing killer.

We had a Holmes when we lived in an apartment where the neighbor's cig smoke would get blown into our unit. It helped a lot but certainly not 100% removal of the smoke. We also changed filters at least monthly. The filter was HEPA plus charcoal.

Definitely very noisy. You can have a low/quiet mode, but it doesn't really work unless you just want a soft breeze.. I just use it on high when I'm out.

I bought one from Costco from a company called Winix.. I believe it was about $130.

It's basically just a house air filter connected to fan, with an air quality detector. The filter gets dirty so it's working. I also regularly change my furnace filter with a 3m red filter.

I do, it engages every time I fart. Doesn't actually remove dust like I hoped it would, on the upside my room doesn't smell like fart.

that's the one I use.. it has 4 fan speed settings.. anything above level 2 takes time to get used to if you're putting it inside your bedroom.. i have it on 24/7 in my room set at level 2 and I'm pretty used to the noise now..

I have one of those Sharp ones. Got it to keep the dust down in my bedroom since that's where I keep my electronics. It seems to work somewhat. That being the room gets dusty slower.

The HEPA ones work best for allergens. I have a mild grass allergy so I find it helps. My only issue is the filters are bloody expensive.

you're supposed to keep it closed, the idea is to have the same air circulate thru the purifier several times an hour.

I live in a small city in a low pollution area though.

I have one with the activated charcoal filter over top of a hepa filter. They say you are supposed to replace the filters every X months, but I have had mine for a year, and all I do is wash the charcoal filters and hepa filters off with water.

Is this an OK thing to do? It seems to wash all the visible dust off them...
