The box fan's power will vary wildly with size and model. But, if you assume a large fan with 100W of power, running 8 hours a day, 365 days a year, then you'd be running $20-$40 in electricity a year depending on your electricity rates. A dedicated device should be cheaper in electricity.

But, the fan has advantages that a white noise generator doesn't have. Blow it on you in summer while you sleep and you can have a higher thermostat setting while being comfortable (you'll save more than $20 there in AC bills). Blow it on the ceiling in winter and you can have a lower thermostat setting while still being comfortable (save a lot of money that way too). You can buy a model with an air filter for cleaner air, or a water bath for humid air.

That sounds reasonable, thanks for the info. Any box fan recommendations? The last one I had was a Lasko I believe and it just got nasty w/ dust; that was another reason I wanted to avoid one.

I use a box fan nightly as well. Helps drown out the fatty that lives up stairs quite well.

my mom got me a homemedics one for xmas a few years ago.
it has several settings

"summer night"
"babbling brook"
"heart beat"
"mountain stream"
"rainfall"
"white noise"

i pretty much use the rain one, exclusively.

i never used it, until i started hearing douche baggins next door and his skank getting it on and then i was so happy to have it.

i've never looked back, since.

If I run my central air's 'fan always on' option without the AC compressor or heater going at the same time, is that power consumption comparable to an external fan or dedicated generator?

the lady had the same problem when she was living on Briar. Problem is, no matter what you do or who you are, some of those hardwood floor condo buildings amplify whatever footsteps you make. anyhoo...she just had to move. Police couldn't really do anything, and it was so bad that even dispatch could hear the foul beast stamping about over the phone.

and...she's always used a white noise machine, though it doesn't always work. (RE: current mental case next door)

I've been considering this one on Amazon for a while -- the reviews are great and there are lots of them, but it's expensive and ugly. Why couldn't they at least make it black?? WTF

Oh, hey, that's the one we have.

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. Someone needs to smother that orcha.

what about one of those miniature clip-on fans? I used to have one for years (was necessary in NC, the days before AC....). I got so used to it I completely depended on it, the noise more than the air-flow.

Though I think the recent ones are a bit quieter....they tend to get louder as they age...

lol, yeah I had to go up there at 3:30 am last week and tell her to shut the fuck up. Not everyone is a trust fund wastoid who never leaves her fucking condo or does a goddamn thing ever. The hardwood floors are what kills it. I can honestly hear when her boyfriend goes to take a piss in the bathroom, that's how much sound travels through. The walls are perfect though.. just the way it goes I guess.

The problem is really that she isn't making that much noise because when I go up there I can hear her TV and it's loud for 3am but it's not really blaring or anything, her music is never blaring but I can hear it perfectly. I tried to talk to her about it but she gave me some doe eyed bullshit routine and just went back to what she was doing. Cops aren't going to do anything... my only recourse is the condo association and assesing fines for noise violations because it's past 10pm, but I don't want to be that asshole. If it was a loud ass party I wouldn't be as kind about it but it's just the hardwood floors.

The central air fan blocks 90% of the noise that comes out of there. She really doesn't walk around much but her little shit-rat dog does. Most of the noise is the Peanuts teacher-esque 'wah wah wah' of her TV or her getting a train run on her by some random brah's while listening to Jack Johnson at 3am.

It isn't that she's being outlandishly loud, it's just that I can hear everything she does perfectly no matter what volume it's at.

Typically when my central air kicks in, the noise is just enough to distract the sounds of her walrus moans.. but I do not want to constantly run my air/heat, especially because my unit is a power hog and it's expensive as fuck.

I am looking for a nice white noise generator that makes a good amount of noise (like more than air whooshing from a vent) but not enough to be a jet engine.. I do typically like it on the louder side though. The caveat is that it needs to be extremely conservative on power consumption as I will run it for about 7 hours a night. Something that takes up less power to run than my furnace, like if I were to just leave a computer plugged in all night.

Thanks.

Play some porn music with the subs facing the wall.

Nothing like sleep deprivation to put a guy into a foul mood. :p

Our place is pretty well insulated, and my wife's anything but fat, but from the sounds she makes while walking around she could be driving a tank through the house.

I weigh more than 2x what she does, but I can move through the house with just a random occasional floorboard squeak. I walk on the fronts of my feet - she walks so heavily on her heels she's going to break something.

ah...good point. Rolling your feet for the win! 4 years of marching band and it's a hard-habit to break. Go upstairs and give the ho-bag a lesson in proper condo-walking.

She needs a lesson in being a considerate human being more than anything.. from our brief conversations I get the feeling that she's never worked a day in her life

when all else fails, take the broomstick to the ceiling.

hell, can't you start blasting your amps at ear-splitting decibels? That'll learn her.

That's one reason I don't want to make a huge deal out of it, because I am admittedly loud as fuck sometimes.. but I do it within the limits of my condo association's rules so I don't feel that bad about it.

That's what really gets me though, I have pounded the ceiling a few times and she just pounds back. One particular incident like this went down when I mentioned in my earlier post I went up there at 330 to tell her to stop making noise. She was like 'oh I had no idea it was that loud sorry.' I'm like, oh that's interesting because when you pounded back I thought you were acknowledging what an inconsiderate bitch you were being but I guess you were just saying hi back to me?

Good question.

I often will run my central air fan switch set to ON, rather than Auto if I need air or noise.

Not sure how to read this but the blower itself is marked:

Volts : 208/240 Motor HP./F.L.A. 1/6 1.3

Not sure if that means 1/6 HP and 1.3 Amps ?

Unfortunately my unit just gives specs for the heater consumption, not the fan only option, so I cannot tell

ugh that boar was rolling around in her trough last night, completely not giving a fuck about anyone else as usual.

I'll probably pick up a box fan tonight.
