We use this turn it on high and it's really loud. We actually keep it on low and it's still fairly loud.

We have it pointing straight up so it actually circulates the warm air down from the ceiling.

LOL @ the euphemisms: "Hambeast feet", "Rolling around in her trough", "a trust fund wastoid who never leaves her fucking condo."

I feel your pain; literally. Above us is an insane older couple (60's). The woman has a bad hip and one leg is totally crooked outward...and she wears hard-soled shoes in the house. And she doesn't sleep at night. AND, and, and she CLEANS the HOUSE at 2:00AM. No vacuum, but sweeping, moving furniture etc.

B/C of her bad hip she can't bend down to take shoes off. So she gets into bed and drops them onto the hardwood floor, one at a time.

Every night I lay in bed and hear here coming down the hallway:

...clump, THUNK, clump, THUNK, clump, THUNK.

Then she gets into bed:

clump, THUNK...*pause* THWOCK! (left shoe) THWOCK! (right shoe).

B/C the battered old witch doesn't sleep, she gets up and walks the house every 10-15 minutes until about 4:00AM when she falls asleep. I get up at six. :frown:

that sounds awful michaelD

I just need to be wealthy enough for a penthouse condo in a highrise here to avoid dealing with idiots.

Use your computer, and play recorded ambient sounds when you sleep. Wind blowing, rain, ocean... You can do that for the cost of running your computer. I imagine you could find the recordings free.

Thankfully, it's just for one more year, then I'll be relocating. :) And it is awful. My apartment is just loud all the time. We live on a major artery (two lanes of traffic each way) and the main bus station is four blocks away.

OTOH, the apartment is huge and beautiful, the landlord is awesome (she lives other side of the city) the location is 10 mins from work and shopping.

I just don't sleep much. I hope her freaking hip just gives out and she has a long, happy stay in the hosptial. Old, hobbly-ass bitch. (and she's an unfriendly old hag too boot).

I hope your situation gets better!!! I know mine won't until I MOVE.

I've used white noise on repeat on the iPod connected to little speakers. As loud or quiet as you like, and if you already have ipod + speakers or equivalent, very cheap.

i have a hepa air purifier running in nearly every room of my house.
I like how they remove tons of dust from the air, and create enough white noise to remove the sound of traffic form the major US highway i like only 15 feet from.

Just got my Kill A Watt today and checked out the Marpac Sleepmate 980 I have. It uses 7W on low, 16W on high. Compared to my fan that uses around 40W.

Get a decent speaker set + amplifier + MP3 player.

1) Download and install Goldwave
2) Create a new file. Length...I don't know, 5 minutes maybe? 1 might be good, though I'm good at finding repetitive patterns in white noise if a short sample is played repeatedly.
3) Tool menu -> Expression evaluator
4) Noise -> Brown or White. I prefer Brown noise.
5) Encode to MP3 with LAME; Razorlame is a good GUI. However, you can use this commandline to get highest quality: -q 0 --replaygain-accurate -b 320
6) Set to loop on your MP3 player.

As for power consumption, I don't know what a speaker set and amp can draw. But if you go for low power, you can't get very much sound.
(Or maybe buy a Tornado Fan. ~16W draw. :p)

For fun, boost the bass on your speakers, and do this:
Effect -> Filter -> Lowpass, Initial Cutoff = 200 Hz

That, plus this, plus this. (Vibrating portion runs off a wall wart, so if the power is out when you need to wake up, the clock will keep time, but it won't be able to wake you.)
