Winter always makes it impossible to wake up due to the lack of sunlight.

Do the sunrise alarms really help?

Any particular model you'd recommend?

Thanks.

Hmm.. I am also interested in this.. I've seen cheapish looking alarms but I'd like something decent.

i've thought about it, but my wife normally gets up before me and makes enough racket that i don't need one.

It helps a little bit, though mine is a cheaper version: I just use a digital timer for the lamp by my bed.
But it's definitely not something to use as the only means of waking up, unless you hook up an array of 1000W of fluorescent tubes.

I believe it's supposed to be a subconscious thing.. The light slowly turns on and your body interprets that as the sun coming up i.e. time to wake up.

I'm not sure if a lamp clicking on will do the same thing, but maybe? I would imagine a sudden blast of light to be annoying whereas an emulated sunrise would be soothing

Anyone else use one?

I'd like to try one out, but the only one's I've found are $100.

I guess it varies for everyone. I'd also wonder about the whole subconscious thing. A lot of that "soothing" stuff is probably talk from people who conveniently just happen to be selling very expensive lamps.

There's not much that's going to be soothing to me when I'm waking up at 6:40am.;)

That's a weird concept. I don't like when timing schemes dick around with the natural light. I'm screwed up for weeks when DST kicks in. They need to get rid of that, and if people want more usable light, they can wake up earlier.

I used one for years - got one of the expensive ones as a gift. eventually the buttons broke and now I wake up to an old ipod.

It certainly seemed like it was easier to get out of bed when using it, but not drastically, and could've easily been placebo effect.

I've thought of getting it, and just replacing the light with a variable relay that gradually lights about 10kw worth of bulbs. Though, do they make 85 amp AFCI breakers? :p

I like the idea of waking up without the super loud sudden shocking buzz of a standard alarm clock.

I used an x10 lamp controller and firecracker module and then scheduled my lamp to slowly increase in brightness over 20 or 30 min.

Now I have a non-dimmable CFL lamp, so I just have it come on straightaway.

To be honest, I don't think the slow "sunrise" was any better than just coming on. The key for me is waking up with light.
