Anyone up and move to another country not for a career?

I am looking into moving to Europe for at least a year, hopefully longer. This would not be career based and I am possibly looking at not having a job upon arrival. I've been to Europe before and at first glance, would love to move to Germany. I've got a couple of friends who seem to be interested, this may change of course if they have to actually act on it. Regardless, I would like to move there with or without friends. Has anyone done this before? ..am I completely crazy?

EDIT: I can only speak English and a limited amount of Spanish.

I've considered it, but I'm too much of a pussy to follow through. Hopefully you do it so I can live vicariously through you.

Do you speak German?

I think the issue you are going to run into is a visa.
You can't just move to another country and find a job. Lots of paperwork to go through to be allowed to work there.

Good luck.

I am often tempted to do the same...to Germany in fact...but I would probably have a job or a slot at a university first and start from there.

Then again, I guess it is certainly possible to go there for 90 days, land a job, and see if they'll give you a work visa. (Depends on the type of job if you can do it this way or not.)

Do you speak German at all?

I was in Sweden for 2 years going to school and was not allowed to work since I am an American. Had I been from Canada I would have been allowed to have a part time job.
Silly laws. Of course this was before Sweden became a member of the EU. Not sure what the impact there will be (have a feeling it will be even more difficult for non-EU citizens to get a job).

Might be good to atleast speak some of the language to where you are going. Otherwise you will be stuck doing fast food, trash pickup or lawn mowing.

You need to research it first, it's not as easy as you'd think.

I'm not thinking it's going to be easy, this is why my friends will probably bail on the idea after they find out how much work it will be.

My cousin lives in Japan and he loves it. He is making good use of his CS degree from Berkley to teach English. ;)

I moved to Vietnam in 1971 for an extended camping vacation and the opportunity to meet the local people...

There are a few countries/islands in the South Pacific I wouldn't mind checking out with the possibility of moving there, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and maybe even New Guinea...(there's just something about the idea of dating a headhunter woman...;)
