anyone try the new office 2007

Has anyone here tried office 2007, especially word 07? Does anyone notice that typing seems sluggish as if it isn't as responsive as past versions? It almost seems as if i can type faster than it can display, which was certainly not the case with office 03. Is there any way to fix this?

As an student in science and engineering who often has to type extensive lab reports, I found that Office 2007 really improved things for me. I'm really looking forward to it more than any MS product refresh ever. The interface is wicked and everything is SO easy to find. No more CHARMAP to type Greek symbols and mathematical operators. No more filling in equations in black pen after printing out the report because they were impossible to format in Word. No more having to use Photoshop just to try to write a freaking document!

In terms on technical performance, I noticed some bugs in the early version which could occasionaly cause things to crash but otherwise, I would performance to be just as snappy as previous versions. I didn't notice any sluggishness.

The new Excel is a friggin joke. It takes, and I timed it... 145 seconds to open half of the files I have. And I can't figure out how to make everything back to Office 03. The other half of my files open just fine. The difference is some save as .xls, some save as .xlsx, and it's the latter that take forever to open and no one has been able to tell me why I'm getting two different save file extensions.

Oh and the big pretty buttons and the "youre too stupid to understand how menus work" approach by Micro$haft really puts me off.

I hope this is just quirks from the beta software. Is there a way to make Office 07 look like 03?

That was the main reason I liked it. Really easy to use and format symbols/equations in documents, more so than previous versions. I'll definitely be picking up the final version once my university has it in their software store.

Methinks you need more RAM, Office 2k7 is a bit of a resource hog, I'll grant that. All my Word and Excel files open within 2 seconds of clicking on the file in Explorer.

The new menus in 2k7 are one of the best features MS added, everything is incredibly easy to find now. There's no more hunting through layers of menus trying to find some function you want to put in your spreadsheet or adjustment to your word document. Once you get used to the new system, its much more intuitive. You're just used to the old standard and refuse to change. 😛

As far as making 2k7 look like 2k3, I doubt it, but I'm uncertain.

I don't think RAM is the problem... I have 2GB of it, paired to an Opteron 165 and DFI Ultra-D mobo. I don't understand why some files save as .xlsx. It's those formats that take over 2 minutes to open.
