so you're saying it doesn't perform the same functions as win 2k?

It's a server OS like the guy said. Why would you pay so much money to only have to strip out the components that you don't need unless you're not really paying for it. Stick with windows xp. It'll simplify your life.

Yeah man, if you don't know the difference between a server OS and a workstation OS, you don't need to be messing with any server OS. Your school just GAVE you a FREE copy of Windows Server 2003??? I seriously doubt it's legitimate.

Okey... so your school decided it was best for you to run a server, now ask them what kind of server you should run... this isn't an XP upgrade, this is a Server OS from MS not meant to run games and crap... so if your school wants you to run a server on it, then do so, if not, discard of your downloaded copy...

For games, 98SE is still the best os you can find...

Well said. But...

This is true ONLY if the games do not work with Windows 2000 or XP (those would be certain DOS-based games that don't run under compatibility mode). The Win98 gives me two FPS more than Win2k argument is old and tired, so forget it. There's a Tom's Hardware article that exposes the BS of that argument, but I've posted the link so many times already that I'm not searching for it again.

Let me guess CS major and your school has given you the evaluation version (120 full-use Windows 2003 Server), this is quite common for many CS programs.

Rather than comparing Windows 2003 Server to Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 Professional you really need to be comparing it to Windows 2000 Server.

To help you get started here is what Microsoft has to say (product overview). and here is what they have to say about Windows 2000 Server (product overview).. Of course you will notice that many of the things on the Windows 2003 Server overview are also listed on the Windows 2000 overview. Of course you ask "why is this"? And the reason is this (as a metaphor):
Windows 2003 Server is to Windows 2000 Server as Windows XP Pro is to Windows 2000 Pro. (Hey I think I'm going to add that to my sig!)

Now get yourself a crashbox because you arent going to want to run this as a desktop once you get yourself going. Install Active Directory, setup some of the other server features such as IIS6 and the POP3 e-mail and wow your friends because you are running a server in your dorm room! Than come back to ATOS and help us explain to all these people who seem to think that using Windows 2003 Server as a desktop OS is a good idea. Here is another metaphor for you (because I'm on a roll:
Using Windows 2003 Server as a Desktop OS is to Driving a Screw with a Hammer. It will get the screw in the hole and it will even work fine (some of the time) but it's not going to be pretty.

Why did you quote my post??? Obviously, I don't need to know this, the n00b who posted the question in "Off Topic" needs to know this.

You suck at teh intarweb!

Oh, and to the others. I have a split server/workstation that runs Windows Server 2003 that runs Exchange and games ;) I don't have enough money to buy another desktop just for games, so I use my server.

Not so much as for your benefit as for the others here.

dual-boot, it will let you run and configure and learn your server "as a server" and than you can boot into XP to play games.

My school gave me a free copy of MS Server 2003 too.
It's a new program here at UCI called MSDNAA, (MSDN Academic Alliance or something like that).
They give us all this software, i.e. MS Visio, MS PRoject Pro, MS Studio .NET, WIN XP, and more.
And they are all full version, not evaluation versions.

just to let you guys know...

No, it's strict Microsoft policy to each month take all participants of this program to a retreat (read: brainwashing session) to remove any "contamination" by thoughts of Unix, Linux, Mac OS or other such impure Operating Systems.

Why does everybody assume bad things? Someone has a question and come people respond with insults. Probably not the best way to keep people coming back.

I agree. By being rude/insulting you are actually degrading not only this forum but yourself.

I installed 2003 server on my spare PC just to check it out. It has the 2000 interface not the XP fancy one. But it works pretty well as a stand alone workstation/client OS, pretty fast and stable. Good for networking.

If you have a free copy, I see no reason not to use it.

i dont like 2003 server. a lot of the defaults are kind of a pain to get around. once you get around that though, it had trouble recognizing a western digital scsi drive of mine that 2k and xp have no problems with. still has some kinks in it i think.

like any new OS, switching over isnt going to be 100% smooth. i had problems with win2k when it first came out, then i had problems when i eventually upgraded to xp. as for the servers at my last job... there are a lot of new features of win2k3 that i like but nothing that would make me want to spend the money/time to switch over. lets face it, win2k is a rock!

yeah, but usually hardware support with each new generation of OS from microsoft has gotten better. i've never run into an os that couldn't recognize a hard disk, and a pretty common one at that. and breaking backwards compatibility with existing applications forcing you to upgrade isn't my idea of getting my money's worth.

Because message boards are where the geeks get to be mean, and vent all of their frustration accrued from years of mistreatment by a world who hates them, but recognizes a need to have them around.

Oh why did you have to go and bump this old thread? I wish all this Win 2K3 Server as a Desktop stuff would just die.
