I really don't know what they mean by "whine" out of a panaflo. That's news to me. I've used about a dozen L1a's in various installs and they're all very quiet, no whine. Note the specs on the 92mm fan, they're twice as loud and only blow 1 more cfm? They also only gain 1cfm by increasing the size? Both fans run @ 1600rpm. Sounds fishy to me.

Forget the published numbers, given that each manufacturer will use a slightly different method to determine them. They're only valid within a given manufacturer's lineup. otherwise, you're comparing apples to oranges. Poorly designed fans won't work as well, but other than that, the most reliable comparison is taken from the power consumption. Panaflo = .1A, Silencer = .08A, and low noise NMB = .06A. The relative noise and airflow fall right in line, IME.

I agree that looking at power consumption is a good way to estimate airflow and noise. The other thing to take into account is the bearing and motor noise. I noticed that panaflos with their hydro sleeve bearings are much quieter than ball bearing fans. You can often hear the ball bearings and the sound from them can be high pitched and annoying. And some fans make a clicking sound from the motor turning on and off, which is what the motors do to keep the fan going.

I have the Silencer and the Panaflo L1A.

IMO...the Silencer does not push as much air as the Panaflo..and the noise difference is negligible....and I mean NEGLIGIBLE. nothing scientific to test CFM. I just put both fans across my palm to test.

I have 4x Panaflo L1A on my sx1030 and a Silencer on my PAL8045. the case is silent.

If I had a choice now...I wold get the Panflo for better price/performance. I bit into the PCPower rating of CFM too. LAstly, about the Silencer, as the review says " No way 27 CFM." :D
