Anyone there with "old" machines run WinXP?

I am running Windows 2000 at the moment and was wondering how Windows XP would run on my computer...

Basic Info:
P3 450
PC100 384 MB
TNT2 Ultra
WD 5400 rpm 13.0 GB

Yeah... so are any of you guys running Windows XP with similar stuff? Does it run at a decent speed or should I just stick with Win2k?
I don't play games too much (obviously my hardware stops me from doing that).

It should run very close to what your system is running now. Just make sure you turn off all the playskool features, and you'll be fine.

I have it running on a AMD K6-2 300mhz box w/ 64 megs of ram. Runs fine

I had it running on a 266 k6 for fun. Ran ok, but slowwer than all get out.

Meaning no fancy-custom desktop? Hmmm... should I just save myself the trouble and not upgrade (in other words, is there anything about winxp that makes it a worthwhile upgrade)?

my main computer at work is running win XP , i upgraded from win98 , my burner made coasters 60% of the time under win98, now its 99% good
seems the same as 98 as far as speed etc, but its a work pc, no gaming

20Gb hd, the controller is only an ATA/33 so that is what its running at

No, there are some good upgrades in xp. My system runs noticeably faster since the upgrade back in October. But, im running on a duron 850. Networking, new drivers, etc.

I only upgraded from 2000 to XP because I was having hardware trouble with an IDE CD burner (UDMA wouldn't work no matter what I tried), and I had recently received a free copy as a membership premium.

If 2000 is working fine, I'd leave it. It's not a wothwhile "for the hell of it" upgrade. XP runs about the same, except some of the OS features can slow it down.

I'm running it on my Thinkpad w/ Celeron 333 and 128MB. It runs fine. I turned off the cutsey XP theme though.

Your system should still run XP fine... but dont bother, stick with win2k... It does the same thing and uses less resource...

Thanks for the advice guys, yeah I guess I'll just stick with win2k and build a new computer later this summer.

True, but XP's improved compatability was a big issue for me. Id take it over 2k anyday...

True, but XP's improved compatability was a big issue for me. Id take it over 2k anyday...

Definitely so true! NT4 was one of the most incompatible OSes ever. Win2k was almost good enough to use as a home general-purpose OS, but some games didn't run XP changes everything in the NT world! I've yet to find incompatible software that can't be patched or upgraded to work on XP.
