Anyone successfully swapped a hard drive platter?

I've had plans to do it, but I haven't found the time. I'll let you know how everything goes whenever I get around to it.

Yeah, I just tried the freezer trick with no success. It's not mine so I'm not too worried about it, but I promised my cousin I'd do everything I can.

Freezer trick did work for me...

Let me retrieve some vital data off a dead drive..

I don't think you can create a clean enough environment to do that without mucking up everything. They say a particle of smoke from a cigarette sitting on the platter is enough to cause the head to crash.

stick it in a thick waterproof ziplock bag overnight in the freezer.

You'll probably have anywhere between 5 minutes to 20 minutes or possibly an hour to recover your data. If you're lucky, it will actually fix the drive.
