Hell, we have debit cards and credit cards...she likes writing checks...and coupons are like hunting for deals for her...she uses electronic coupons and paper coupons...then tries to get the store to honor both kinds on the same item... :p

...what if you told her that she has access to many, free, cash-back credit cards that would seriously increase the value of all of those coupons that she furiously searches for?

"Say honey, saving 5% on 10 boxes of Colon Blow Granola Bars sounds great and all, but why not also make the purchase with this 5% cash back card, that is good for the ENTIRE grocery purchase?!"

every time you write a check, you are losing the ~$0.05 or whatever those things cost to purchase. (granted, you already bought the stupid things...but it's not like they expire, and so should be saved for the things that won't earn cash back or must be handled with paper, anyway.)

They also don't offer any real security and customer recompense, unlike a cc.

I don't write checks PERIOD.

The last time I was inside a bank was many years ago. The same with the post office.

The worse is people who will try to argue with a cashier about a coupon that does not apply (ex: item limitation per customer, or it's expired etc). They'll hold up the line to save 10c on toilet paper. Come on man let it go, the time you're wasting is worth more than what you're trying to save.

Touche! :p How about the people at Walmart who pull out 5 different gift cards to pay and only two of them work but they keep swiping the bad cards. LOL.
This would be me a couple of times  ... "This person wasted entire seconds of my life. Entire! Seconds!"

So, you're cool with losing money every time you buy something?
You do realize, that all of those "cash back" schemes, are paid for via merchant fees (higher fees for using those CCs), which, gets reflected in the prices you pay at that store.

You should be getting a discount, for paying cash. That's "cash back", that you can actually pocket right away.

Yeah the way credit card companies operate is actually quite corrupt and small business are the ones that really pay hard. They're not even allowed to give discounts for cash either and have all sorts of rules and regulations they have to abide by. We think it's great and all because of the rewards but that's at the expense of small business. Big multi nationals won't really be affected as they are just so big that the fees are pocket change.

Nah...fuck that...but I do collect them from various places and give them to her...I FEED her addiction. :p (because even though it might cost me some time in the line, it saves a bit of money. Hell, she used to be able to save $300-$400 per month by couponing and price matching when we lived in CA.

Uh huh, suuuure. Can't let ATOT know that your Sunday mornings are spent with your wife telling you which coupons to clip while she flips through them.

Shrug, we don't get a discount for cash though.

Actually, minutes. I could have been back home posting on ATOT for five minutes if I didn't have to wait for you. :D

Thats only part of the story. Its also paid for by the people who pay interest on their balance and, in the case of point\mile reward cards, people who make poor value redemption selections. So there is still a way to get value out of them even considering the merchant fee cost.

Ugh, old people are the worst with this. Never get in an aisle with an old cashier, old customers or young women customers with a ton of gerber bottles in her kart. (Red flag for a WIC transaction) If you do, you better have a 3DS handy! There's this one young cashier I like, when I see he's working I get in his line and stack all my flat items in such a way that all bar codes line up neatly and evenly in a row. He shoots me a smile and runs his scanner straight down all the bar codes at once. Now that's what I call express checkout!

Actually that's another thing, as a customer if you make sure the bar codes are accessible that can really make things easier for everyone involved. Especially bigger items.
