Anyone Still Make Popcorn The Old School Way?

I've made it a few times and I used a metal bowl that I put the corn, oil, and seasoning in. I put aluminum foil on top and poked holes in it. I put the bowl on the burner and shook it from time to time.

I make it in a wok on the stove. It could hardly be easier. Good reminder. I haven't made it in awhile. Might do that tonight :^)

Yup. Oil, saucepan, stovetop.
ditto... I gotta popper that I used umpteen zillion times but haven't for several years. Stovetop for me now. A little oil. No butter, a sprinkle of salt... done. I buy in bulk out of bin, organic. Not too much, if you keep it too long it pops badly if at all.

I don't miss the butter. The oil in the pan gives an oil taste and I like that. You don't get that with a hot air popper. Adding butter makes a mess of the popper or is an extra step if you melt and pour over. That gets your hands messy too.

For years we did it in an electric frypan rather than on a stove element using a regular frypan or pot. Once for fun for the kids, my wife set that up in the middle of the Living Room floor with a big clean sheet spread out, and NO lid. Flying puffs accompanied by gales of giggles!

The REAL "old school" way from when I was a kid was a steel mesh cage on the end of a long metal arm and filled with dry kernels. You held that over an open fire when camping or backyard barbecuing, or over a hot stove element, and shook it to keep kernels moving to avoid burning.

I did it all the time as a kid, haven't in so long I don't even remember how.

I use an air popper which is nice for clean up and it's healthier, but I can't ever get seasoning to stick to it afterwards.

Dont use the stovetop per se. But virtually the same thing using a oil based popper. This is my go-to combo at home which is quite often
