Wouldn't mind trying out a double capacity/thickness battery, that would make phones about as thick as a closed 3DS, but triple capacity/thickness is too much IMO.

Because 99.99% of the time, a half an inch extra makes absolutely no difference.

What practical applications are there when that extra inch makes or breaks your ability to use the phone?

Really now? They are gigantic, heavy, and ugly. Some people do like them, but to say that there is no reason to not prefer one is a bit much.

Ugly is not a practical reason and also extremely subjective. Gigantic? It's a half inch thicker, no difference 99.99% of the time. And heavy. Seriously?

Because people think that slim phones are aesthetically pleasing.

That's not a practicality reason. The market thinks that thin phones sell better because people think they look better.

They're also much lighter, easier to hold, easier to pocket, and yes more pleasing to look at. Are you really trying to say that looks don't matter?

Not really. Lighter is meaningless when the phones are already light as shit. Easier to hold and pocket? There is no extra difficulty associated with phones if you're wearing regular sized jeans. Unless of course, you're wearing skinny jeans.

I squat heavy with a phone in my pocket just fine. I run 10K's holding my phone in my hand the entire way.

It's not a practical issue at all. It's 100% subjective looks.
