Anyone sticking to current Gen for a while?

Was wondering how many of us were going to stick with the current Gen consoles after the new ones come out? I was going to pay for the ps4 in full and decided not to.
I will have no trouble staying plenty busy till this time next year playing madden 25, nba 2k14, gta 5 and cod ghosts on the ps3.

I'm not real interested in any of the launch titles, the only game I really want is dead rising 3 but I won't pay $500 for just one game. I've got quite a few friends that are keeping their ps3 for the same reasons as me.

Waiting is always the smartest move.

Even thought the potential hardware problems should be minimal, these are much more sophisticated OS/ecosystems, and there will inevitably be some hiccups technically with them.

But much more than that, with such a competitive start (how many years has it been since we saw a near-simultaneous launch?) and a depressed economy (YoY game sales have been tanking already) combined with low-end hardware compared to 360/PS3 respective to that era, we will almost certainly see price drops within 12 months. Combine that with new SKU features, bug fixes, larger libraries, $19.99 older titles by that time, and so on, and you have a recipe for the smart people just skipping them altogether for this season.

Sure some people won't be able to resist the lure, but unless you just *HAVE* to have a new console, by next Christmas we should see $299 bundles along with MUCH MUCH better libraries.

im gonna keep my 360 hooked up for sure, not sure bout my ps3 though. it depends if i'm over hot shots 6 by then or not. i'm kind of over it now but i've been busy so i don't know.

but i gotta keep the 360 hooked up for ssf4:ae since none of the new consoles are backwards compatible.

ill still have my ps3 sitting in my a/v closet though probably, just unhooked. i won't have enough slots on my avr for all of these lol. although with the x1 and ps4 i can sell my bluray player since ps4 and x1 should be able to play hd audio and 3d at the same time.

There's still some great games coming out for the current systems for at least another six months so I'll still play them but getting one of the new systems on day one.

I currently have two of each current-gen console, and I'm planning on selling one of each, so I'll have one room with the next-gen and one room with the current-gen. The only thing that I can't decide is whether I want to sell the PS3 now and sacrifice my Blu-Ray capabilities for about three months until the PS4 comes out (and the PS3 gets moved). It probably wouldn't be a big deal since I rarely watch Blu-Rays in that room anyway, and I might get the most for it now before people start considering unloading their consoles after the PS4 is released.

I'll be keeping my PS3 and playing it still when I buy a PS4 at launch. The PS3 has exclusives coming out throughout this year that I wont be able to play else wear. They (Sony) continue to strongly support their system even with the new one right around the corner, I have no plans to miss out on those games.

True, prices will definitely crater once the new consoles are released. It always always always happens, and it surprises me when people somehow think that it will somehow be different this time.

It's simple economics. With the current gen, there is relatively stable demand for current-gen consoles, and as they are still required to play new releases, people generally don't want to give them up easily. Result : modest supply, modest demand, reasonably high prices used for PS3, mediocre used prices for 360s (pricing depressed somewhat due to the notorious failure rate on them, which pulls value down even on slims).

Once the new consoles hit, demand for PS3/360 will plummet, and supply will skyrocket (used) .. result : prices fall to the floor. Through the floor even.

Unless you keep them around for 5-10 years, then the prices go up considerably for the more sought after stuff (that wasn't re-released 15 times in between).

Yup :) It's why a mint n64 boxed is worth 5x the value of a Wii lol

We might see a bundle at 399.99 but not a price drop, that would mean Microsoft would have to cut 150 off their MSRP in a year to make Sony follow suit.

There is no way in hell the new consoles will be that cheap in a year.

YES!

Plenty of current gen games I haven't played, and plenty more exclusives coming out that I will want to as well.

I just simply don't have the time (or really the will anymore, tbh) to play EVERY game as soon as it comes out, beat it, and be ready the next day for something else to throw my money at.

Let them come out, let the furor die down and the dust settle a but, a better library build up, and we'll see.
At this rate, I'll probably pick one up around spring/early summer of '14.

You guys are serious? The ps4 is a mid range gaming pc with a blu ray player thrown in for $400. I don't even console game but I'm likely buying one just for the 3d blu ray capabilities and it will likely be a much better interface to stream Netflix and prime than my smart tv. That and I might play 1 or 2 games a year is enough for me to throw down the $400. Sony is really giving these away at or below cost and you're looking for a price cut? Wow.

I will keep my 360 hooked up for sure. Can't play SF4 or MVC3 on the next gen consoles yet. I'm sure Capcom will capitalize on the situation eventually and release a $40 Xbox One / PS4 edition of each eventually though. >_>

Grand Theft Auto...
There are no launch titles that would make me have to buy the system. No backwards compatibility on the PS4 means my ps3 will still be rocking for a while.. My launch Fat system needs to last just a bit longer!

if they are secretly working on ultra sf4 for x1/ps4, then i'll unhook my 360 for sure.

I've got a PS4 with Watch Dogs preordered, but the PS3 wont be leaving my cabinet for years probably as like the PS2, most of the games I like (mostly JRPGs) lag behind in the states and will still be PS3 exclusive titles as they come our way. It'll only get replaced when the XBOne matures and has enough exclusive titles to make me willing to purchase AND that flow of continuing PS3 releases more or less finally runs dry.

No reason not to keep enjoying both, it's not like current gen games stop being fun come November.

Mark my words, bookmark the thread, and be amazed when it comes true.

Sony may or may not drop the price, but I absolutely guarantee that between the XB1 and PS4 we will see a new SKU with either a bundle, a price drop, or both before Christmas 2014.

Bluray players are like $40 already, mass produced BD drives are even cheaper for the companies that mfg the. 500GB Hard Drives are nothing. The APU is relatively cheap. The power supply is relatively cheap. All of the stuff really isn't that expensive, with the major exception of the 8GB of GDDR5 that's in the PS3 (might be long-term advantage Microsoft as it will give them more leverage in lowering prices while still being profitable unit for unit).

These things are HUGELY less cutting edge for 2013 than the 360 was in 2005 and PS3 was in 2006. Back then you were dealing with very high end GPUs, large custom CPUs, much higher TDP and power requirements, Bluray was nutty expensive for the PS3, on and on and on.

Add to the equation the economy is crap, both companies are launching at the same time, and the most important thing for both companies is to gain and hold early traction in getting these things into gamers homes. After all, the more gamers get on board, the more likely you are to get one sold to their friends. It's pretty typical for groups of friends to all get the same console in order to play online together. The name of the game is to sell the systems so they can get you on the online subscription, game sales, and microtransactions.

Once the launch hysteria dies down and Q1 2014 sales are near-dead (again, look at Q1 numbers for previous launches), whichever console is falling behind will be under pressure to shake things up.

This is going to be different than it was with the PS3/360 war, not only are these consoles massively less expensive to make, but they are launching head to head with at least similar prices.

In 2006, Microsoft had no real reason to price drop, because their competition wasn't out for most of the year, and then after launch was already hugely more expensive. Post-PS3 launch, Sony would have loved to have price dropped sooner, but the enormous expense of manufacturing it and limited production capacity made that basically impossible to pull off. All in an economy much much healthier than today.

I'll put $$ on there being a price drop and/or bundle before Dec 1st, 2014. The most likely first possibility is a $399 XB1 bundle. There is also the possibility they will release a Kinect-less SKU.

One must remember that neither the PS3 nor 360 sold all that much at launch pricing. Sales were flat outside of Q4 for the most part, and sales rates really didn't start climbing dramatically until the price drops. Examine the numbers for yourself, 360 sold 5 million year one, but slipped to just over 3 million the next year. PS3 was even worse, selling out the initial shipment, but sales were outright horrible at $599 and even $499. PS3 didn't start gaining steam until they reached $399, and even then was somewhat sluggish. 360 started gaining serious steam when $299 models with decent HDDs in fall 2008.

I've been watching and correctly predicting gaming market movements for the better part of three decades, with a great deal of connection to the industry, along with a great deal of interest in economic indicators and statistics. In my eyes, I would be stunned if we DIDN'T see at least one price drop or new SKU between now and next year. It could come in any number of ways :

Instead of a $399 bare PS4, we might see PS4 + Eyetoy for $399. Or PS4 + GT6, whatever. Instead of a $499 XB1, we might see a $429 XB1 w/Forza. Etc.

I'm probably going to have to out of necessity, since I'm a moron and didn't pre-order anything. Knowing that things like GTA 5, BF 4, and other games will be on next gen, I just can't bring myself to buying them on current gen, just too gross. I'll just play BF3 until January when the second wave of stock comes in. Bleh.

I really want to try and make myself wait, but I just don't know if I can. I really should because my backlog is huge and none of my friends are getting the new consoles right away, but I just don't think I'm strong willed enough to cancel my pre-orders and stick with the old consoles.

3d capable blu ray are still $100. I've read it also includes a 7850/7870 level graphics chip and those are still going for $150-$180. Add in a sleek case with the rest of the components(cpu,ps,etc..) and it is still a really good bargain. Add a $30 remote and you have a nice living room entertainment center for under $500 bucks.
To wait another 12 months for a game bundle or an add on accessories seems extremely cheap and foolish for something that really isn't costly to begin with.

I tend to agree here. These things are not cutting edge. They were being marketed as "top of the line" pc's (at least MS said something to that effect) which isn't true at all.

That's not to say the graphics updates and overall updates won't be welcomed, but really so far, most of whats being touted is just more gimmick similar to the Wii than any real next gen substance. The games might look pretty, but they don't really scream next gen (and I don't mean graphics). They just look like a bunch of rehashed ideas so far.

I am. i also think these next-gen consoles are not gonna really take off for at least a year after release, maybe longer. Once that happens i will see whats what but until then I have plenty to keep me busy on my 360 and ps3.
