My dad has an electric generator he can hook up to his house. It's a 10k model; it can run everything--until the the water heater comes on. Those two 4,500 watt elements in the water heater (of course) suck pretty much all the juice. If you get one, make sure there is a cut-off between the circuit box and the power company's lines--the electricity can flow the wrong way and possibly hurt someone working on the lines, or short out equipment.
