In OK we don't have barcodes or magnetic stripping on the back oof our IDs.

We do now...my friend just got his license this week and they have started using the new licenses that amoung other things have a bar code...your going to get on the next time you renew you license.

I've never understood why people get so paranoid about stuff like this. No one wants to "invade your privacy," you're not that important.

You obviously have not known someone that has suffered identity theft.

I saw one for the first time last night. We went to a club and they swiped my DL as we went in.

An identity thief will find it much easier to actually LOOK on the front of your goddamn license to get the info rather than buying a magnetic stripe decoder. Your argument doesn't make sense - you're essentially saying, "I'm not paranoid about the stuff on the front of my license in plain view, I'm paranoid about the stuff in the magnetic stripe that requires an expensive reader to decode and actually contains less information than is on the front of my license."

Buying alcohol is governed by state laws regarding its sale. If you don't agree with the liquor laws your state has set up, then cut up your license, stop driving, and don't buy alcohol. Or burn it, if you're that concerned about ID theft.

The problem will solve itself - no more card reading, no more invasion of privacy. Of course, no booze and no driving go along with that too. You give up some freedoms to take advantage of others. Learn to live with it.

Like I said earlier, COOL IT. If you really want to prevent identity theft, pay with cash and don't buy alcohol until you're old enough not to be carded. Seriously, minendo - you're freaking out over nothing.

Wow, you were up kind of early buying alcohol...

According to the Exponent, all of the Village Bottle Shops are going to start using those things. They've used them a couple of times on me but it hasn't really bothered me. It seems to me that this machine would actually have to be tied into the DMV to get all of your records. The strip isn't big enough to encode every piece of information on the card. Village Bottle Shop is the only place within walking distance of my apartment so I'm going to continue shopping there. 🙂

Went to the liquor store tonight and saw something that I don't agree with. They now scan your ID like a credit card. Gives them all your personal information registered with the DMV. Turned me away from making any more purchases with them. Walmart and the grocery stores don't do this so they get my business now.

Your thoughts?

they have it at clubs here to verify that the id is real and not expired.

and now i am on their mailing lists grreeeeeeat.

The solution: Lower the drinking age to 18.

Yep, that's a great solution. It would definitely solve all of the problems presented in this thread. (or not)

Well it makes a whole lot of sense that you can buy cigarettes at eighteen and can go to war at eighteen, but you can't have a beer until twenty-one. Tobacco and arms have bigger lobbies!

I'd rather an 18 year old get piss drunk than smoke cigarettes...

that's along my line of thinking as well..
i never understood in the US why the drinking age is so high.. In Canada it's 19 in all provinces and 18 in Quebec... 12 in the Territories (joke)

they scan them in here in Pa BUT only if you have a PA licence. Me being from NY i dont get scanned. NY hasent started scanning them either

it shows

name
DOB
address
phone
height
eyes

basically all teh stuff thats on the licence anyway

I don't know if this is what happened at the new self checkout at Home Depot this morning, but some old dumba$$ lady was screaming that her DL has nothing to do with her CC and she has never been asked to show it before....

I am hoping she was a crook and if not hope someone does steal her CC one day.
