Remember when he was in Thailand staying in these hut like buildings, where he meets those surfers who he leaves the map to the Beach with? Are there places (any country) where you can rent places like that for a week or two at a time, preferably within a 10 minute walk to a beach.

um, thailand, perhaps ;p

try Pattaya, Phuket, Ko Samui. They should have those kind of huts-like taverns.

tsunami = 2004. Since tourism is such an important industry, the Thai government rapidly rebuilt all damaged beach and resort towns. While Pattaya is not an island, Ko Samui and Pattaya are along the eastern seaboard so they were not affected by the tsunami.

I don't have the exact details. Why not just go there and find out. Worst case scenario is that you find a nice comfortable hotel with air conditioning.

Seriously though, ask a travel agent.

You looking for something like this?

"Kona Village lies within the site of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village on 82 private acres at Kahuwai Bay along the Big Island?s Kohala Coast. Established in 1965, the resort is home to 125 thatched-roof bungalows called hale (ha-lay). Each is reflective of Polynesian architectural styles. Nestled around lush lagoons and pristine white and black sand beaches, guests enjoy vacation fun from water sports (snorkeling, diving, kayaking, deep sea fishing and more) to cultural and historical exploration within resort grounds."

I knew watching all those HD travel shows would come in handy one day. ;)

Yes, yes you can. I've rented places like that in Fiji, Samoa, Costa Rica, and Bora Bora for week+ time period. Hotels wont really cut you weekly deals, but if you look for backpackers they will offer weekly rates.

Also in Bora Bora Tahiti, you can also do homestays which aren't as flash as 5 and 7 star hotels, bt it's cheaper and if the family likes you you can stay as long as you want, and you get a lot of culture.

Samoa has a sort of "hut" system like the States have. It's great. A family manages the hut on their property which all are right on the beach. You pay them 10 bucks a night. You don't have AC TV and sometimes electricity, but what you exchange for it much better.

Costa Rica also has a lot of homestay like accomodation.

Unless you are purely looking for a hotel, you can pay a hotel any amount of money.

Our place in Fiji was the best though. It as a small backpackers on a private island. 6 of us stayed in a hut that was 10 metres from the beach. We had 7 acres to roam, and the total amount of people staying at the resort wasn't more then 30. Sunset happy hour every day, cheap cheap really great food. I got away with staying 2 weeks paying no more then $150 for accommodation and $200 on food and beer.

I was about to point that out. Be prepared to shell out some dough though.

I can't find the link. It was on the island of Nananu-i-ra, but I remember them saying that a 7 star resort was buying up all the land and plunking down villas. So that might have taken effect by now. But here's a pictures http://www.freeimagehosting.net/]] It's worth looking into if anyone is planning a trip to Fiji, but like I said I don't know if it's still alive. But I do know there was also a 5 star resort on the island and another backpackers, so those might still be running.

$805 is pretty good. I paid $3000 for a week for an overwater bungalow last June.

One thing you have to remember about Bora Bora is you pay all that money to get there. No point in skimping in the luxury. But hell you can buy a Motu island in Bora Bora for about a million.
