Anyone seen the Aurora Borealis?

If so, where did you see it and how did you get there? Eakers, can you see it near where you live?

I got two friends planning a 5-day trip to anywhere in Canada where they can see the Northern Lights, but they have no idea where to go or how to get there. Call this the ultimate roadtrip...and I'm thinking about joining them.

Yup, hundreds of times. I'm on the southern part of Manitoba and you can see them from here. The key is to be outside of a big city (which isn't hard in Canada) so you can see the sky clearly. The problem you have is that the northern lights don't follow a schedule, it's hit or miss whether you would see them when you come up. As far as I know there's no "weatherman" who can tell you when you will see them.

If you want a fun trip drive up to Manitoba, then to Thompson, and then take the train to Churchill (or fly from Winnipeg). Go on a tundra tour, see the polar bears, and watch the northern lights. It's a big centre for polar bear/northern lights watching, celebrities go up there as well as film companies to film northern lights.

Anyways, yes you can see them from southern Canada, and I would assume northern US.

Nope 🙁

Q for those of you that have: I've seen the film footage, shows them wavering like a snake. Is that time-lapse, or do they really move like that?

JC

edit: Wait, once a couple years ago we got a little here. It was just a red glow in the sky, not like on TV 🙁

JC - it really depends. Sometimes it's just a faint greenish flow, sometimes it's more dynamic, but slowly moving greenish/red blur. However, I have seen the lights in ways that are unbelievable. One time they was a spot focussed up in the sky and the lights were rotating around this point, long bright, crisp slivers that would go flying out, expanding and contracting, changing colours the whole time. It was this giant rotating spokes. Words can't even describe how amazing northern lights are when they are going crazy. You are constantly going...wow...jaw dropping. I have been driving on the road sometimes and I will pull over and stop the car to watch, it is that beautiful.

Again remember you can't plan this, it's pretty unpredictable whether they will be specatacular, or blah on a specific night. I guess you have to live here🙂

Well if they're coming all the way from Atlanta it probably won't work too great, that's only like 1 night for viewing up here. I would suggest 3-5 nights to get a good chance at seeing them really well.

My real suggestion is to do it properly and go to somewhere like Churchill or if you want to go hardcore, go up to Yellowknife. Take the time to experience the north while you're at it. This way you will see the northern lights in the best possible way, and also polar bears, tundra, etc...

I saw them all the time when i was stationed in North Dakota. I worked mainly the night shift and when the lights appeared i called my wife so she could see them. sometimes it looked like fire, really cool and spooky.

I would agree, but they are trying to sqeeze it in during Thanksgiving break (just two days off for us). I even found some info on Yellowknife being a popular place to go.

Hmm... so they must be pretty visable in North Dakota?

What about Washington? My girlfriend used to live in Port Angeles.. she's never really talked about seeing them, I'll have to ask her.

I saw it once when I was around the age of 12. It happened to streach all the way down to the Chicagoland suburbs. It was bright red. I saw it coming out of the library with my mother and brother. I thought it was awesome, and knew what it was. My brother screamed "It's poison gas! Run!" and my mother half believed him, and tossed up into the van, and did not allow me to go outside to look at it. I had to look through thr window.

I've seen them only once or twice. I lived in Northwest Iowa when I did see them, and it was in the country. Pretty damn cool.

I'm sure you could even see them in South Dakota, but the key is to stay out of the cities. If there is any 'background light' like from cities, you for sure won't be seeing no northern lights!

I've seen it quite a few times. It's especially cool when you don't realize its there and you look up, only to see it standing out in the sky. I live in central MN.

Also he needs to consider the fact that a plane ticket from Atlanta to Yellowknife (with at least 2 connections) would be AT LEAST $2500.00USD. 😉😛
