Anyone running an Opteron on an XP-90??

Yeah dude, I really dont know why my idle is so low, but my load is so damn high. Must be that stupid Core 0... the one that fails prime @ 2.7!!!!! ARRRGHHHH

Well...the difference idle to load is like 20C regularly for me...sounds reasonable.
and another word on the TT Bigwater: As it is very basic, I would not expect more from it than from a very good air cooler. Speaking from experience, my temps are not lower than with my 7700Cu, but the rig is far more silent on the other hand...

And also I would not be worried to much about reaching 55C under full load...driving both cores full stress for hours is a very synthetic situation and won't occur too frequently during regular use (well, unless you do multithreaded encoding all the time 😉 ). Besides the Tmax specification for the Opteron is 65C so there is still breathing space 🙂

Hmmm... that's what I was afraid of with the Big Water.

This really sucks. Guys on this board are getting 2.8 from their CCBWE 0546 XPMWs at 1.5v and mine is failing Prime running 2.7 1.52v. Grrr...
 
The fan SHOULD be on blow...

The T-Take Bigwater kit sucks, it shouldn't be considered watercooling because it doesn't offer the performance of real watercooling. Why pay more money for something that only performs as well as aircooling? There is no reason to... if you go water you have to go all out and get a GOOD watercooling kit, because the bad kits are just like aircooling.
 
I have the XP90 on my Opty 165 and it never goes above 52C under sustained heavy load. Idles in the low 30s.
 
55 and under is basically fine for the entire K8 family in my experience, though its a little hot for 90nm, even considering dual core. I have a 130nm 3500+@2.5 and 1.55v (2.2, 1.5v stock) with an xp90 and a panaflo medium 92mm fan. I get 34 idle, 52 load, 54 3D load. 3D load is higher because the graphics card is further heating the case, you might want to try one instance of prime95 on one core and a game assigned to the other, as this will probably produce the worst case thermal load.
 
25C idle, top out at about 43C at 2750MHz and 1.45v. Best I can do stable. I am surprised that you have 25C difference from idle to full load. My experience with the XP-90 on a number of core is similar to the above (15-20C delta).
 
If you have really cool ambient temps, it will help your idle temp tremendously. I was able to get a 146 @ 2.4 to idle at 26C when the ambient temp in my room was around 64F.

I can't wait until OCZ's Revolution $200 Phase Change cooling comes out. That will be complete awesomeness 😉
 
So what exactly makes the TT Big Water suck?

Is it the single fan radiator?

Xoxide.com has a Big Water kit with 1x120mm radiator and 2x120 radiator for $169.

What makes it suck? The temps it gets! It's terrible.

With my custom watercooling load temps were usually around 40C with chips clocked around 3 Ghz with 1.6 volts.

That's how watercooling is, you shouldn't get load temps past 45C unless you have an extraordinarily hot chip or you're running over 1.7 volts

ok, but my question was WHY are the temps so high? Is it something that can be remedied by adding another radiator for $30, still making it $70 cheaper than the next water cooler I could find?
 
The whole kit is flawed. You can't just get a more powerful radiator because the pump and waterblock still suck.

It's like this. It doesn't have a bunch of strongpoints and then some weak point you can upgrade, thus improving the performance of the kit a lot.
Instead, every part is a weak point. If you upgrade one part, you will be limited by the other parts. IE you get a new CPU block and your pump won't be powerful enough etc.

Basically you're best off spending 250$ on a real watercooling kit like teh Swiftech Apex (where every component has some real ability) or not doing watercooling at all. Because it's ridiculous to spend 170$ on watercooling and get the performance of aircooling.

You can build a better performing kit yourself for not too much... 120.1 heatercore w/shroud 120mm fan isn't too much, + a swiftech 6002 waterblock and an aqua xtreme 50z pump... what's all that cost 150$.
