Anyone running an AthlonXP 2500+ on the retail HSF?

Is anyone using that thing? How are your temps? If you've tried overclocking it, where did you hit the limit?

Damn - I don't remember where I put my fan, but if I remember right it looked like a Volcano 6 or Volcano 6 Cu, which was a decent cooler for it's time.

I'd expect about 2+ Ghz out of it with that cooler.

I did not take the time to check the temps, but i had mone at 3200+ speed at stock voltage with no problems.

But then my swiftech MCX462 arrived 🙂

I have a Barton 2800 using the Retail hs/fan. I haven't tried overclocking it, but the Retail hs/fan shouldn't be used for that. My temps range from 56-65c depending on how hot my room is, no heat related problems though.

I just built my aunt a computer using an XP2500 with the retail heatsink. It ran about 43 idle... 50 under load... and when overclocked to 2.2 Ghz, it ran about 48 idle and no more than 55 under load. That's with the thermal pad too, no AS3 or anything like that.

Don't let someone tell you retail heatsinks are junk... the new ones (ones with copper chunk screwed to bottom) are GREAT.

I just bought the 2500+, Overclocking it to 3000+ 400fsb using retail on Asus A7VN8X Deluxe 2.0.
Bios Temp reading 36C, while Asus Probe reading at 41C (these temps are not idle, doing normal tasks..browse internet...word, excel, money2004 etc..).

Prime95 torture test goes up to 46C reported in Asus Probe. I didn't check in the bios, I believe in Bios it would be 41C as reference to the aforementioned.

The heatsink has the copper base.

Does anyone know why Bios temp says differently than the Asus Probe software?
which one lies to me?

Not bad!!!

I have the newer HS with the copper plate. My temps were similar (idle 43 and load 50) and a bit higher on warm days... If your OC results were that favorable with the stock HSF, heck, I'll see what I can do!

I use arctic silver compound thingy. I even tried to overclock to 3200+ 400fsb temp normal use around 42C in asus probe.
prime95 failed in about 20 minutes...load was at 49C in asus probe. Normal use was stable at 3200+.

I couldn't increase the Vcore to get it stable since my Vcore now is at 1.69 while 2500+ is at 1.65 already.

I settled for 3000+ 400fsb....not much different anyway.

It's worth noting that even the "old" heatsink has a copper base (it's nickel-plated, hence the shiny look) 🙂 I use mine on a Palomino 1600+ (my 2500+ gets my Alpha PAL8045).

I have a 2500+ @ 1.92 right now and my idle temp is 36 / load 43.5. I also have a Sunbeam UV Window fan and 2 80's on my hd, so that may affect the CPU temp a little bit as well. But yeah, the stock HSF are pretty good I think, as long as you put them on the right way... :/

Hey, I've got another question.

I've got a KT400 mobo, and I know that if I get this proc, I'll get one set of multipliers, either below 12.5 or over 13. Is there any possible way to know which one I'll get? And is there any way to get the other multipliers without heavy physical mods? (like connecting bridges)

Used it for a day or two, then opted to go for a slk-700a

So uh yeah... what were your temps? Did you overclock? Where did you hit the limit?

Well I received my 2500+ Barton and it's very quiet. The fan runs at 3000 rpm and the cooler is made by AVC. I replaced the thermal pad with AS paste. I then OC'd the chip to 3200+ speeds and had to raise my core to 1.75 volts for stability. The temps range from 35C idel to 53C loaded.

I was looking at Vantec Aeroflow cooler because it runs at 5000 rpm but is as quiet as a 2000 rpm fan. Does anyone have this cooler?

Thanks, olias

Thanks M4H... I assume you are talking about a 2500+ Barton not OC'd. BTW, how's the noise?

I ran 3DMark 2001SE and it locked-up. I'm now running at 10x200 (2.0GHz) and at the default 1.65 volts. This lower speed passes 3DMark and even Prime95 torture test. My temps are between 35C and 50C.
