Anyone running a server in a closet?

Just built a new pc so I am thinking of putting my old one in a closet to run as a file server.
It's an AMD 2400, 1GB pc2100, winxp pro.
I already have my cable modem, router and a switch in the closet so I would like to put it there instead of running another cat5. Then I want to network it with my otehr pcs and maybe put pcanywhere on it so I can run programs from it if needed. (ie burning music, large file downloads).
Anyone see any problems with this setup or otehr suggestions?

thanks.

Any good guides on setting up Remote Admin?
I may go that route but I have to install pcanywhere on my main rig anyway because i use it for work, etc.

Do a search on the Net for "Remote Desktop"...I'm sure there are tons of guides.

Otherwise...just got to

Start / Programs / Accessories / Communication / Remote Desktop.

Put the computer name you want to connect to and click connect! It'll open up in a window that wil be in full screen with a small menu at the top. It'll look exactly like the desktop of the server.

Use the Options to make the window open in various sizes and different other options. Works awesome.

Would remote desktop be better to use than vnc?

I just want something fast/reliable and easy to configure.

It's built in to windows, very fast and secure. No reason not to use it! If you are on a LAN, it's like working on the computer while sitting at it.

You can also connect via the internet if you've enabled the web portion. I'm able to remote admin my server from a webpage...IE browser..no software needs! I love that feature.

Closet is a very useful location. But how about this! An old refrigerator modified (shelves removed and cable pass hroughs made) housing a server in a a cool ambient temp. 🙂

I saw it once and have since wanted to try it. old fashioned cryo-cooling.

Don't forget about the dew point when doing anything that involves below ambient temps.

Remote access works great. I have two machines at work, one with Linux, and one with Windows. I just use rdesktop on the Linux machine to remote into the Windows machine via remote access. I can even copy/past from one desktop to another. Very useful and really easy to set up.

Good point - that can be managed - but here in Arizona it is not a problem. It is so dry most of the time that dew points don't happen. 🙂
