If so how are you liking it? What are your system specs and what games do you play?

Save your pennies and wait for the 8800GT to drop in price.

From the benchmarks, how well you like a 8600GT depends on what resolution you want to game at, and whether you're playing last year's games, this year's, or want to play next year's above 1024 x 768.

Isn't there gonna be a 8800GT 256mb version coming out?

Supposedly, for around $200.

What resolution is your monitor? if it's 16x10 or lower it could be the perfect card for you.

I've got a 8600M GT 512 DDR2, and it's pretty much perfect for my needs. Although, to be fair, one of my considerations was screen size (15.4" widescreen), and had I picked a desktop, the budget for my laptop could have easily landed me a 8800GT and a nice quad-core :p.

I play my games mostly high settings, with Crysis being the notable exception. Its decently fast, but not a screamer; the only way I can really describe it is "fast enough".

To answer the OP:

Setup:

C2D Merom T7100 1.8 Ghz on Santa Rosa
2GB DDR2-667 RAM in Dual-Channel
8600M GT 512 DDR2 (underclocked from reference clocks)
Vista Home Premium x64
Forceware 169.04

Copied from my post on the 8600 Go Thread:

HL2: Maxed settings, full HDR, 16x AF, 6x MSAA, 1280x800. FPS: 70-300 ~ish
HL2:Ep 1. Maxed Settings, Full HDR, 8x AF, 2x MSAA, 1280x800. FPS: 50-70 ~ish
TF2: Maxed Settings, full HDR, 2x AF and no AA, 1280x800 (Mostly because I am a FPS nut on MP games). FPS: 50-70~ish
ET:QW. Maxed Settings, 2x AA and 4x AF, 1280x800. FPS: 45-60+ if unlocked
Guild Wars: Maxed Settings, 4x AA and 8x AF, 1280x800. FPS: Solid 60
UT3: Detail Max except World Detail 4/5, 1024x768. FPS: 45-60+
Crysis DX9- All Med except texture detail high, 1024x768. FPS: 35-55
Crysis DX10- About half and half Med/Low. 1024x768. FPS: 35-50
Far Cry- Maxed out, 2xAA, 1280x800. FPS: 45-60 (?) (All I know is that this was very playable)
FEAR- As far as I could tell, ran well on max settings. Had weird driver issue where FPS tanked after 10 minutes of play, supposedly fixed now but uninstalled and too lazy to check.

8600GT 256 here sys specs
C2D 6550 @ 3.2
2 gigs Crucial DDR2-800
XP Pro

games run sweet, just got done playing some Rainbow Six: Vegas. I have the resolution pumped up (not all the way) and the settings on high, runs wonderfully, and looks beautiful on my 22" CRT. I would recommend looking into the 8800gt, but if your budget is less the 8600 is nice. I picked mine up for umm $119 @ PCclub, think you can find them for about $110 online. The 2600 is no sloutch either, I know a lot of people really hate on the card, but it does a good job in current titles. Yeah, in Crysis it will probably have to have low settings but for the price either card would be gooood.

i do

8600GT,
AMD X2 4000+
17'' CRT

running most games at 1024x768 comfortably with all quality set to high but no AA. UT3 ran fine, so did TF2, Hellgate London, and even Crysis.

Why play in a non-widescreen aspect ratio, especially when you *have* a widescreen monitor?

I have 8600gts and play almost anything fine 1440x900 at max detail.

I think 1950gt is probably the better card at the price range. It will give you more fps than 8600gt.

in some instances the 2600XT > 8600GT, even GTS. can't go wrong with either card for $100. i'd probably go with a 2600XT silent. or wait for the 3850pro?

That's the special word. It does perform great in quite a bit of titles but it also craws in others. COD4 for instance.

I have the eVGA 8600GT 256mb GDDR3. Got it for $90 after rebate from newegg.

Main two reasons I bought that card are price and my current power supply. I'm pretty sure my computer won't handle an 8800gt or better as it's rated around 310 watts. I'd need a new PS and then I'd need to spend $260+ on that card...not worth it for what I'm doing. I have an HP Pavilion m9000t, Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66Ghz, 3GB Ram, driving a 22" WS lcd via DVI. Vista is running at 1650x1080.

I'm running COD4 and multiplayer I'm getting around 70-80fps at the second highest widescreen setting...not sure what it is 1440x900 maybe?. I'll probably bump it up to 1650x1080 and see how that runs. Settings are medium to high I forget. No AA.
