Just curious if many people here work with Novell Netware as their NOS at their job?
I'm taking an 'Advanced Networking' course here at school, and we're concentrating mostly on Netware 5.1 this semester.
I know that it is widely considering the most robust OS for large-scale LANs, but don't really read much about it in actual use.

Thanks alot.

My campus San Diego State, or at least the department I work for, uses Netware for networking together thousands of faculty computers. I think it is most commonly used for large LAN's so the most use probably is for large companies, colleges and things like that. I wouldn't use it for my personal home computer network, but I think it is the preferred software for large LAN's. So I guess if you want to be a network admin it would probably be beneficial to learn Netware.

I happen to be a genuine Netware 5 CNE! So maybe I can help too. The thing that sets Netware apart from the rest is the distributed Directory Services.

Novell $uck@ the big one. The old stuff uses IPX/SPX which bogs down the network and produces WWAAAYYY too much overhead. The newstuff albiet nice and steady is impossible to get tech support for and is being phased out of the company itself. I have it here where I work and we are ripping it out to replace with NT/2000 which is much nicer for the applications and configurations as well as getting up to the second support and information. Plus it's not going anywhere....

Take a look at recent new articles stating novell's stance on netware and the company in general...So long and good riddance to bad rubbish!!!

So this is a thread about who works with Novell and not who hates it and why. Thanks anyway...I'm sure Dooling appreciates your valuable input.

Edit: Yes I know I'm being an a-hole but you are pushing my buttons! Nothing personal.

Hey all, thanks for the replies. I guess I'm not really looking for answers to any specific questions, I'm just kind of curious how widely used Novell systems are out there in the 'real world.' Trying to figure out if this course is really worth all the effort, kinda. ;)

Quick6 - hey sorry, but I can't actually get you a copy. the one we're using for the course is an unlimited server w/ 5 connection license, but I can guarantee the professor wouldn't allow any of us students to be making copies of it, he's pretty strict about licensing, etc... for good reason, obviously. you can get a free Novell Client from their site if you have any use for that. I just got it yesterday so that I could get into the school network from off campus.

CTR - although like I mentioned I don't really have any specific questions for the time being, I'll keep you in mind during this semester in case I do, if you don't mind? ;)

BidDady92 - thanks for a, uh, different perspective on the system. always good to hear from both sides, I guess.

Thanks all.

Not here. Check the stock market, it speaks for itself. Anyone I knew that ran Novell, switched.

Just my .02 and not taking sides for either party.

Not pushing any buttons here. :)

Most of the companies i've consulted for use netware. You just can't beat the directory services.

BIGDADY - if you would like to debate protocols and overall network efficieny of netware vs. microsoft, i'd be glad to browse you to th light :)

Hey Spidey -- I know you like Netware better than Win simply because it SCALES.
